Vermont has become the 17th state to get rid of criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a measure into law Thursday.
The law replaces criminal penalties with civil fines similar to a traffic ticket for possession of up to an ounce of marijuana or five grams of hashish.
The law also treats possession of such amounts of marijuana by people under age 21 the same as underage possession of alcohol, including referral to court diversion for a first offense, potential civil penalties and/or license suspension, and criminal penalties for a third violation.
Previously, possession of up to 2 ounces of marijuana was punishable by a six- to 24-month jail term. Vermont legalized the use of medical marijuana in 2004.
Hail to the King!
This reminds me of Super Troopers. (& that scene with linda carter, explains everything in one simple phrase.)
I fucking love marijuana
Come on Oregon, when is it your turn so I can 420 blaze it like a fagit.
One by one, down they go. I hope this will start spreading worldwide.
I was not expecting this to happen so soon from my state to be honest.
And the list of things I love about Vermont grows a little.
11/10 state, would immigrate.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've smoked countless joints and spliffs while walking down Main Street, but maybe now I'll throw some more blunts into the mix.
Come on, no just bring it next door to New York, and I'll be content, wait, we already have decriminalization, well time to make it legal then.
I hate living in a conservative state because we'll never have wonderful things like that happen here.
Gay marriage and legal marijuana won't be here for a while.
Still, getting a 100 dollar ticket for smoking weed when you get caught would be annoying as fuck.
By decriminalizing marijuana they actually delayed the legalization of it in the state by putting it off for a while. No politician is going to say ''hey we decriminalized it so now lets legalize it.'' when we all know they are just going to leave it at that.

Decriminalization is better than nothing.
Hey hoodoo, instead of rating like everyone in this thread dumb why not post your opinion on maybe why everyone's dumb, and why Vermont decriminalizing marijuana possession is dumb?
I wonder how long before New Jersey starts seeing some marijuana tolerance
[editline]11th June 2013[/editline]
other than medicinal
Vermont is the bomb. Born and raised. Honestly if you lived anywhere in Vermont and didn't see this coming I don't know how you've been so ignorant for so long.
Well, I was raised in New Hampshire, the most awkward state politically in the country.
Definitely retiring in the VT countryside
Gotta love the Green mountain state.

Well now if that's not obvious... "Wah, other people are using a drug, I don't like that drug, I was told in school and by my parents that drugs are bad, they shouldn't use that drug" Anything other than that I don't see any good reason. Drugs only cause violent crime because of illegality, otherwise, it's simply a crime because it's illegal which is asinine. Especially cannabis of all drugs, I would speculate that at least some part of why he's against the whole legalizing process is because it's become so popular, and, most likely a teenager, has to be edgy, and not agree with the majority, just for the sake of disagreeing.
It'll never come to Kentucky, well soon.
However, you can get baccy anywhere. Most trouble I've gotten into is to stop asking people to buy me ciggies.
Sometimes I forget Vermont is even a state. Good on them though

No, it won't. Shitheads like that are going to be doing it regardless of its legality.
Jeez, just a few months back I was living in Burlington, if I were to go back now the place is probably a fucking cloud of smoke.
