NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Thursday called the new Windows 8 operating system scheduled for release next month "a very exciting new product" and "a very big deal" for the world's largest software maker.
Gates said in an interview with The Associated Press that he is already using Windows 8 "and I'm very pleased with it."
Windows 8 is Microsoft's biggest overhaul of Windows in more than a decade and the company's attempt to stay relevant and exciting in a world where mobile gadgets have started to overshadow personal computers.
"Hardware partners are doing great things to take advantage of the features," Gates added. "It'll be a big deal."
Microsoft Corp. will release Windows 8 on Oct. 26 along with a new version of Internet Explorer.
Gates responded to a question about Windows 8 during an AP interview about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's key role in a new global campaign to eradicate polio.
Windows 8 will replace Windows 7 on practically all personal computers sold to consumers.
It features major changes in the way consumers interact with their machines, and versions of it will also run on tablet computers and smartphones.
Although Microsoft has grown into much more than a maker of computer operating systems — providing computer services to corporations and Xbox gaming machines to game enthusiasts — Windows still accounts for a significant chunk of the company's annual revenue.
In 2011, Microsoft's "Windows & Windows Live" division generated 27 percent, or $19 billion, of the company's $69.9 billion in annual revenue.
That's because he's 56 (almost 57).
Damn Bill. I hate for the day to come when he passes away. :[
Windows 8 IS great.
I highly suggest that all you people who say stupid stuff like "lol i don wan my pc to be xbawx" and actually give it a chance.
It's not THAT much different from Windows 7 and it's fast as hell.

just people hate that new look that you barely see.
Boy, Gates didn't age very well. And he's not even sixty.

Client Eastwood is almost 85.
He's gonna kick the bucket in the next 5 years. Think about that.
Windows 8 sucks
That's because he's 56 (almost 57).
looks about 70.
It's exciting yeah, if it was just released as a new OS or something by a different company, but it's not the windows that people are used to, because people don't like change
Windows 8 sucks
That's a pretty bold statement.
Care to elaborate?
For the people saying windows 8 sucks, i have barley used it, and the single problem i had was with using a mouse for touch gestures.
I would deal with the touch gestures since the performance increase is massive, and the boot up times are very fast.
It's exciting yeah, if it was just released as a new OS or something by a different company, but it's not the windows that people are used to, because people don't like change
That single sentence; People don't like change
Makes me have a brain hemorrhage.
People do like change, they just don't like it if it doesn't change exactly the way they want.
People constantly whine about how music artist change their style and always do the same kinda music year after year, but when they finally change their style and sound, people whine how it's not what it used to be.
Dumb people whine about change, wise people see opportunities in change.

My dad is 52 today and doesn't look a day past 40 - recently he's been doing 100+ km bike rides every Saturday to keep healthy. I can't imagine he'll look as bad as Gates does at 56 (or 57 for that matter).
Unfortunately Gates is just ageing poorly. Not everyone ages well.
That's a pretty bold statement.

Metro.
Also this is kinda offtopic but are you the dude who beats up children for a living
Metro.

Yeah, I make a tons of money for teaching parents how to raise their kids properly.
Just because your only explanation was "metro", I can say that you have used it probably 5 to 10 minutes.
Metro.
GG 10/10 fantastic argument well expanded on.
I will admit that windows 8 is a problem for businesses, I can imagine they don't want workers using Metro but it's actually quick once you get used to it for home personal use.
Is the change from Win 7 to Win 8 as big as it was from DOS to Win95?
As far as the metro thing goes for office things, I'd assume there's a way to make it look like windows 2k like how my school computers (which run win 7 enterprise) can look like windows 98/2000.

Christopher Lee is 90.
Is the change from Win 7 to Win 8 as big as it was from DOS to Win95?
No. It's like going from Windows 2000 to XP. If even that small step.
Metro is slower to use then start menu.
Metro is slower to use then start menu.
Please elaborate.
Metro is slower to use then start menu.
I disagree
Been using Win 8 since the RTM hit the MSDN subscriptions, and I really do love it.
Holy fuck his face is melting.
Despite all the negative feedback, I'd still try Windows 8 for a month or two, after all, I might just get used to "Modern UI"
What's really exciting will be the money he'll get to whiten them teeth.
I say go for it now rather than later, because I don't see why they would suddenly ditch the whole Metro interface in Windows 9. Better get used to it, because it might be here to stay.
