I need some help building a computer since my current one went out on me. This is my first build.
My budget would be about $800 USD. I have a monitor with 1400x1050 resolution that works great, a mouse & keyboard that will work and a speaker system. I could probably reuse the case and CD drives as well.
Some other things:
I can get Windows 7 for real cheap since I have a cousin who works at Microsoft and has a discount on it.
I'm not 100% sure, but I could probably reuse the HDD and the graphics card.
I play a good amount of games (mainly L4D2, TF2, STALKER series, and some Crysis)
I was looking at the Costco customizable computers and got this as a starting point:
AMD Phenom(TM) X4 920 quad-core processor [2.8GHz, 2MB L2 + 6MB L3 shared, up to 4000MT/s]
8GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
FREE UPGRADE! 500GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 320GB
1.5GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]
Integrated 7.1 channel sound with front audio ports
15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, audio
No speakers
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
HP multimedia keyboard and HP optical mouse
Integrated 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet, No wireless LAN
LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
Which came to about $1000. How can I improve?

Massive ripoff. Just look at one of the millions of other threads about building a PC and go with one of those.
I'm confused. Do you already have a keyboard/mouse?
I meet you half way

Pardon the bump, but I formed another build. Is this a good deal? There's a good amount of wiggle room for improvement, and I know some parts need upgrades, but where should I upgrade? Is the power supply on the case good enough or should I get another?

I'm thinking of getting a second power supply and see if I can restore a computer I have that broke
I'm also going to add more to the list as I find better parts and such.

Phenom II x4 925 2.8Ghz
Radeon 5850
This'll max out anything you need.
Oh, and under $1k
Why do you have a 4670 in a >$1000 build?
Get a 5000 series card, maybe a 5850.
Also I can't see the newegg page with all the prices on it - it says I need to login.
I can't read your wishlist illegal paste. Can you get a screen shot of it?

Wouldn't recommend it though.
Okay, my budget is smaller than what it was before. Can you guys try to help me keep it below $850-900?
[editline]Edit:[/editline]
Made a second build:

switch for powercolor 5770 1Gb if you want free Dirt 2.
Xfx if you want cool door hanger, locked voltage, and double life time warranty.
You guys need to make your wish lists public.
And you can get a 5850 in this build easy.

DRR2 and a phenom 2 925 you could easily get an i5 in there.
DRR2 and a phenom 2 925 you could easily get an i5 in there.
DDR3 performance increase is minuscule as is the performance increase with an i5.
DDR3 performance increase is minuscule as is the performance increase with an i5.
I can see the ddr3 but it for future upgrade but the i5 has a significant upgrade in speed. If you try and say there isn't you do not know how to read benchmarks.
DDR3 is only if you need it.
DDR2 is still good enough for everything.

But when they are pretty much the same price why would you go with ddr2?
But when they are pretty much the same price why would you go with ddr2?
If I remember correctly, there are a limited stock of DDR3 Motherboards for AMD and super expensive ones for the 1366 socket.

What are you talking about. Almost all of amds motherboards are ddr3 now and they are retiveley cheap. Also intels mobos are all ddr3 at least for there current series and they are fine on price.

I'm propabily thinking about budget wise, because prices in NZ are way different than in the UK, AND US
Cheapest 1366 mobo is 270$
Cheapest DDR3 AM3 mobo is 254$

Woops I meant the full 3 lane support,

What do you mean 3 lanes. Nobody needs triple channel unless you have a socket 1366. Which is unneeded unless you have a tricrossfire situation.
Also the mobo I posted supports ddr3.
What do you mean 3 lanes. Nobody needs triple channel unless you have a socket 1366. Which is unneeded unless you have a tricrossfire situation.
AS IN
3 DDR3 LANES
not just 2
AS IN

I know. You only need 2 cause no am3 cpus support triple channel and 1156 cpus do not support triple channel either so a waste money.

THen you might as well stick with 775 or AM2+
Like I have I have a AM3 CpU on a AM2+ mobo, absolute fantastic
THANK YOU SEMPRONS :D

Don't get that Raidmax PSU.
It will blow up and take your family with it.
Switch that 965 out with a 955, it's the exact same thing with a slightly lower clocks.
Get at least a 5850 with this budget.
You don't need thermal compound. Retail CPUs come with it pre-applied on the heat sink. Just set the CPU in the socket then place the fan on it and secure it and you're good.
Don't get DDR2. DDR3 costs the same price and is better. Plus DDR2 doesn't even work with that motherboard because AM3 motherboards are ONLY DDR3 compatible.
OR I could shorten all of that and say.
Don't try making a build on your own. Let someone here do it for you so you can see what they picked out and learn what works best.
