SPRINGFIELD, ILL.(IRN)–An Illinois House committee has passed a measure that would allow farmers to grow industrial hemp for commercial purposes, such as to make rope, clothing and other accessories. State Rep. Ken Dunkin (D-Chicago) acknowledges he’s not the leading authority on agriculture issues, but realizes agriculture is Illinois’ biggest business. He says adding hemp to the list of crops farmers can grow would go a long way to diversifying the state’s agriculture industry.
House Bill 1383 says farmers wishing to grow, produce, or sell industrial hemp or related projects must be licensed on a yearly basis through the Department of Agriculture. State Rep. Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) was one of two representatives to vote no on the measure. Her Western Illinois district is mostly farmland, most of which she says is already spoken for.
“Particularly our Asian markets are clamoring for our soybeans,” she explains. “We can’t possibly grow enough soybeans to export on the market.” Hammond is also worried some hemp would be stolen and misused as a hallucinogenic drug.
The Illinois Farm Bureau is on record as supporting the measure, but other agencies such as the Illinois State Police have not weighed in. Hammond says the only way she’d support the measure is if the state police back it.

Dunno why that one Rep wants the state police to support this bill. It's their job to only enforce the law, not make the law. And I don't know what she means about Macomb farm ground being spoken for? Uhhh... I'm pretty sure the farmers can grow a few acres of hemp if they want to, it's kind of their ground not yours. It's also pretty funny how this guy gets all self-righteous about hemp being used recreationally.
The bill hasn't passed yet, it's just coming out of committee, but it's interesting anyway.
HB1383 is named the "INDUSTRIAL HEMP ACT". And here's a link to it on Illinois's Assembly site:

smoke weed everyday
This is good. Industrial hemp has nothing to do with the drug, and treating it as legally the same thing was silly.

What a fucking retard at least do some basic research about what you're voting on for fuck's sake.

Agreed. Industrial hemp has negligible THC content, and even if it did, that's not a hallucinogenic.
This is good. Industrial hemp has nothing to do with the drug, and treating it as legally the same thing was silly.
Well they were both banned for the same reasons. The fatcats back in the day wanted to keep their paper industry. They knew hemp would have destroyed it, so they lobbied with their money and got them both banned.
Why couldn't they have just called it something different to make people not get instantly upset at the word "hemp" :smith:

Only reason it ever became illegal to grow was yellow journalism sponsored by our friends in the lumber and textile industries.
The drug becoming illegal is silly too. (It's sad to see that the alcoholic beverage industry lobbies against it's legalization prominently.)

If this were to pass, wouldn't it be easy to just stick a 'plant' near a field? Wait non-industrial cannabis is smaller isn't it?

There is nothing stopping farmers from growing marijuana in the middle of any of their crops. Making hemp legal won't increase the chances.
Yes, I want to be able to get some braided hemp rope in the US already.
Makes a better slowmatch for my Matchlock muskets than cotton rope.

Why did you rate me dumb then?
what would they do with the buds?
or are the buds used to actually make the industrial hemp?
Why did you rate me dumb then?
Because you come off as a dumb person. :downs:
what would they do with the buds?

I don't think hemp grows buds. At least that isn't the main focus of the plant.
You use the stems and shit for ropes afaik. Not sure how it works.
Well one of the main reasons hemp for industry is illegal is because William Randolph Hearst printed his papers on wood pulp and his competitors printed on hemp paper. As a means to run his competitors out of business he campaigned very strongly against industrial hemp.
Now of course he isn't the sole reason, but the fact that his empire of control was so vast and wide, he had a hell of a lot of influence.

Around here country used in that context refers to a rural area.

Well he should now know not to jump to such hasty conclusions. It's only an hour anyway.
Most of America doesn't seem to realize that you can't get high off industrial hemp.
Case in point:

I thougt cannabis was classified aa psychoactive drug?
I thougt cannabis was classified aa psychoactive drug?
Hemp =/= cannabis
Can we have this in Arizona, please? If I were allowed to grow hemp, I could sell it to a plethora of different industries, and I'd finally have a use for all this hydroponics equipment :v:
Seriously, growing veggies doesn't make as much money as people may think.
Is it detectable by Drug Dogs?
That could be a problem if it is...
I thought Macomb was within the so-called "Bible Belt". :v:

Paper was cheaper at that time anyway... The main reason drugs were banned was because of the changing social climate. Weed was banned just after prohibition ended.
