• Laptop, prebuilt, or build it myself?

My brother needs a computer for college and we don't have much of a budget. I have offered to build him a computer, but both my mom and sister want to get a laptop or prebuilt for him. She wants to get him this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174;+Celeron%26%23174;+Processor+/+15.6%22+Display+/+2GB+Memory+/+250GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/9988402.p?id=1218205766215&skuId=9988402&st=toshiba%20satellite&contract_desc=null I want to get him this: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11687534 But with these combo deals: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.514475 -$15 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.533557 -$15 There's no particular budget, but I want the PC to go down in price. At the moment, the laptop is cheaper by a good deal. I can reuse a monitor (1280x1024). He'll be using this for the occasional game, but nothing at all really demanding. The most demanding game that he plays that I can think of is Minecraft. He's mostly just using it for college, where he's going to do a bunch of stuff with audio. He already has a nice pair of headphones. We are on a very tight budget. Is the laptop a better deal, or should I try to make the build cheaper? Is it worth it to build a computer at this budget? My brother doesn't need much power for what he does. Our unbelievably shitty computer (875MB RAM, single core CPU @2.4GHz, NVidia 5200) was able to run the programs he needs when it had Windows, even if it was slow.
I'd say go with the laptop. As long as it can do what he needs, it's probably worth it, just because of the portability. I'm in the same position at the moment, although my option is to buy a nice desktop, and use my 6 year old laptop for the portability, later to be replaced with a netbook. The fact that you can go somewhere else and do your work is huge, a. you're a little more social, b. you're not stuck in your room while some ridiculous party is going on, and you have to deal with the noise etc.
Most of Facepunch would go with the 'LOL PREBUILTS? DO IT URSELF xdxd" The BestBuy page won't load for me, so I'll have to go with the NewEgg pack.

That laptop is shit, nothing compared to the build you have.
Get cheap laptop for web browsing and word processing with good battery life Decent Desktop for gaming
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115806 if he needs a laptop. Should do the job. He's not going for heavy gaming. Light gaming, and you don't need to buy two computers for playing minecraft. The laptop I found should be able to play minecraft. He will get a shit desktop if he goes with the cheap laptop + desktop combination, will also take alot of space. ( Kinda sucks to use more space than needed. )

And that laptop is over budget.
