Toning down his magical abilities? I don't remember Garrett having any magical abilities in Deadly Shadows, apart from that optical zoom he has, but I'm certain that was a Hammerite mechanism and not explicitly sorcery...
It's just a change in character but things haven't exactly gone well when developers say that.

Looks like he still has the mechanical eye
I can't really see this being that much of a big deal folks, don't get to upset please.
What is that? we heard the word 'Mainstream'? all aboard the facepunch bandwagon!
spineless members of the internet.
"Mainstream." Bring on the dumbs.
I don't think Garrett looks that bad here.
Honestly, he doesn't look terrible. He still has his mechanical eye (I hope that's what it is...) and he still looks like a thief. It's not like he's got knives and swords all over him.
How else would I get the dudes at my frat to play this?
Here we go.
Not even very worried about the character, more worried about what will happen to the game mechanics if they are redesigning stuff to appeal to the mainstream console market.
Here we go! ~mainstream~!
next they'll say they want to ~broaden their audience~ or ~streamline the gameplay~
all buzzwords that curse a game's development to mediocrity
mainstream is another word for casual

they already did, in almost exactly those words:
But, "we wanted to bring in more of the modern audience of the console market."
Garrett can do much more in the new Thief, and he "wanted the costume and design to reflect" the game's added action.
Yep, this game is doomed.
As long as the gameplay/story is still in line with the previous games, I'm willing to give Eidos Montreal a chance. They're in my good graces because of their previous work.
Well that's ominous.
Still, I liked Human Revolution enough to think they'd be suited to making a Thief game.
Here lies the Thief Series
Dead on Arrival
Does the design of a character really matter? The same thing happened with DmC, people were so fixated on the design change that they overlooked the fact that the game was actually good.
well there goes thief
nice knowing you all, stealth genre is probably dead
Or we could wait until we know basically anything about this game before passing judgement on it. I find it funny, people were saying the exact same thing about Deus Ex: HR before that came out, and it turned out to be great.
We give this article boxes because mostly in the game industry the term "mainstream" means:
Dulling and dumbing down design/gameplay to sell more to a wider audience.
The design of the character doesn't matter, the gameplay is what matters.

It's going to be dishonored v2 from what they're saying, along with the screenshots. He was never an assassin, he was a thief.
are you people morons
if any of you actually played the first couple Thiefs, you'll realize that garret's appearance was very barebones and simplistic. All they did was stylize it a bit to make it look cool, and to get people interested in the game. He still looks almost exactly the same, with more straps and shit to exaggerate the gothic tone.

Please actually read and think instead of just seeing buzzwords and reacting like brain-dead idiots.
