I'm ready to buy a new laptop to replace my current one (P8400, 9600M GT) and I want to spend at most $800. Any idea what the best possible purchase is? I'm looking for a powerful GPU for video editing, and stock RAM doesn't matter at all, as I have two 4GB DDR3 sticks ready to be put in.
Yes, I know desktops are more powerful and cheaper. I need a laptop.

800 is a hard budget to deal with.
I really don't want to be the guy who insists that you get a desktop - I'm sure you've considered that already.
Unfortunately, gaming laptops tend to be shit. That's just the reality of it, and there's no way you'll find one under $800. You could probably get a nice laptop with good battery life and an ok GPU for that price, but for intensive programs, laptops tend to be ridiculously expensive and bulky (certainly far from portable).
My brother got a nice Asus that can play games at medium-ish settings on the native resolution quite comfortably, and has a great battery life, somewhere near that price I think. Not sure about the model, but you're better off not getting a "gaming" branded laptop.
I know this is probably the answer you really didn't want, but I can't imagine you'd find what you want at that price range. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

a lot of people (read: one person in the cipwttkt thread) said that the asus laptops with amd a series are pretty nice
Integrated card, shroom!

I should do a demo on what my A6-3400M is capable of. It's scary shit. AMD APUs are great laptop chips/

I got a really good deal and picked up my K53TA for $360 though
I just purchased an Ideapad Y480 (Lenovo) for 850 dollars, I think cheaper options had it running about around 830? I can run any high end game with smooth FPS (40+)
I have an Asus.
Best gaming laptop imo.

GT650M
i5 SB
$900 with OS
If you were to get a gaming laptop, you should ABSOLUTELY consider boosting your budget up to $1000.
With 1k: http://www.xoticpc.com/force-16f3-msi-16f3-p-4346.html?wconfigure=yes
GTX 670M (top-of-the-line, 3rd or 4th fastest laptop GPU, roughly same performance as GTX 460 desktop)
i5 SB
If you get the 1k one, you would be able to run all current games but Metro 2033 at pretty much max settings (but minimal antialiasing) with very good FPS.

My current Asus G53Jw has a GTX 460M and an i7-740QM, and basically can run the following very well:
-JC2
-STALKER: CoP
-Skyrim
-Dota 2
-ArmA 2
-BF3
Rendering time in 3ds max is also quite decent, and the 1k laptop would be MUCH faster.

thanks for being descriptive

ASUS N Series laptops are definitevely the best.
Great build and quality, great speakers, it runs with low temperatures and silent, with having pretty good specs for gaming and such.
The only downside is the amount of bloatware installed when you first get your laptop.

And no one mentioned alienware...?
Because alienware are shitty.
And no one mentioned alienware...?
That is correct, no one mentioned Alienware because their products are overpriced tripe.
And no one mentioned alienware...?
-Runs noisy with a lot of heat
-Overpriced
-Bulky
-The laptop's apparence is really terrible (generally made to please teenagers' tastes).
As a teenager, I find MSI/Acer/Asus' offerings much, much better.
So my life basically picked an awesome community chest card, and got a budget upgrade to $1500. Getting a similar model to before, with these specs:
17" glossy LCD, LED-backlit (90% color gamut (holy fuck))
Ivy Bridge i7-3610QM
GTX 670M
8GB DDR3 1333MHz (upgrading to 16GB)
Two 750 GB hard drives, one 7200RPM, one 5400RPM. I wasn't going to get a second one, but it was so ridiculously cheap I couldn't resist.
Gonna enjoy this thing for a long time!

Because they have no laptops under 800 you idiot

I think it's more because no one in their right mind would buy an alienware.
