Republicans press Obama to back FEMA funding bill as storm nears
The budget showdown is about to collide with a major weather event.
The House voted Friday to fund the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as Republicans cast the bill as an emergency measure to help Americans threatened by the approaching tropical storm.
"This is about people's lives, people's businesses," Rep. Randy Weber, R-Texas, said.
The bill was one of several House Republicans have pushed in recent days to fund chunks of the government amid the partial government shutdown.
They've been pressuring Democrats, with little success, to support these mini-spending measures while the budget impasse drags on. Republicans upped that pressure on Friday, saying disaster response is critical as Tropical Storm Karen tracks toward the Gulf Coast and is poised to hit this weekend.
???
I could have swore I saw an article yesterday saying several hundred FEMA workers were being called back for the storm, but without pay.

This might sound well-intentioned, but it seems disingenuous to me and, though this sounds cynical, smacks to me of some people trying to leverage some control. Karen is a VERY mild storm with wind speeds hovering around 40mph and an expected storm surge of 1-3 feet. It's possible she could restrengthen, but I would be VERY surprised if there was any significant damage or loss of life from this.

At least of last night, Karen was getting weaker and weaker.
When she hits landfall, she'll lose any chance of being a hurricane.

From where it's hitting(live where it's gonna hit), most it'll do now is flood. There shouldn't be any deaths, but there might be loss of power. About it, unless looting occurs, there won't be much damage due to low wind speed.
If the GOP cares about lives, how about letting kids with cancer get treatment from the NIH by reopening the government?
Inconsistent piles of shit.
So, is the Republican's new plan to leave the government shut down except for the things they like?
Fuck off.
Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't there something about Republicans not funding FEMA or something when that storm hit the east coast this past year? I don't remember fully what it was about.
I seem to remember them bitching and moaning about a Sandy relief bill, but I don't know if they actually killed it or not.

Karen is a tropical depression now.
No ACA, no FEMA.
Time to play their own game against them.
a short while ago I hopped on my motorcycle and went to a local gas station for some snacks right in the middle of Karen. After surviving Katrina, a little tropical depression is nothing.
Well I suppose it's "lucky" that the storm in Colorado came and ravaged our state before everything went backwards..
since when do republicans care about people's lives? someone with a law degree look over the bill, I'm sure there's an earmark in there that shouldn't be

They don't care about people, but they care about votes.
And the south is in generally voting Republican.
Ergo, gonna save those precious soon-to-be votes.
