Woman who was jailed 2 days for recording clips of New Moon tries to sue theatre - Polidicks

Jhannet Sejas paid a $71 fine for filming 20 seconds of Transformers in a Virginia theater. Regal Entertainment Group pushed for her prosecution. On Tumpach’s camera, the authorities found a host of pictures she took of her friends and sister in the theater, in addition to two clips of the motion picture Twilight: New Moon, according to the suit. One was 114 seconds long. The other was 85 seconds, the suit said. One of the snippets was captured in hopes of filming Tumpach’s “favorite actor taking his shirt off,” according to the suit. The lawsuit, which seeks $50,000 in damages, claims the woman did not film with intent to pirate the movie, that instead she was having fun with her friends and family at a birthday party at the Rosemont, Illinois, theater. The suit alleges: Samantha, in the open theater area and in plain view of others, was subsequently placed under arrest, handcuffed and was walked through the theater and out to the officers’ vehicle where she was placed in the rear seat of the squad car, while numerous theater guests witnessed, pointed and gasped as Samantha cried with fright, humiliation and shame. You know it's a crime, you know that it's strictly enforced, and you know that even though you aren't recording the whole movie that you still break the law. Yeah, two days in jail was unnecessary, but so was taking a camera into the movie theatre and recording parts of it so you can :shlick: to it later. And I'm sure she did something that isn't being said to get two days in jail in addition to recording the clips, especially if they say that the MPAA recommended to destroy the clip and let her go home.

She is right, this isn't something a civilized society arrests someone over. Write her a ticket, get her to destroy the data, and that is the end of it. If the theater wishes she take her business elsewhere, they can ban her. Arresting her is ridiculous and she has every right to sue the shit out of everyone involved.

Seeing as how the manager pushed for her arrest just so he could get the 500$ reward, he obviously didn't care she recorded a part of the movie he wanted cash.

1 day in jail is enough to put anyone off doing anything slightly disobedient ever again. I spoke to this man who was imprisoned for murder and he said if he were to go back he would be the very first suicide of the night as he couldn't possibly handle another minute in there.

Should have been glad she didn't actually get charged - she was the one in the wrong, and was lucky nobody actually cared about prosecuting her. This is just taking the piss.
