It had better not be Duke Nukem. I don't think my heart can take that again.
Duke nukem side scroller comeback?

If it's still possible to make a good FPS, it's still possible to make a good Duke game.

And yes, it is still possible to make a good fps duke nukem game, but dnf had poisoned that idea as much as it could. The idea of making another one from anyone, let alone gearbox, is just not reasonable.
DNF is like Doom 4 to Duke Nukem, it may have some staples of the series, but all it really is is a caricature with too linear level design. Though I did enjoy the first few playthroughs.

The humor was just childish. There were so many turret sequences it felt like a chore, sprinting sounded and felt terrible, I just had literally no fun. And especially when seeing pre-gearbox footage compared to what we got? Its insulting. They were supposed to just finish it, not completely gut it and gearbox-ify it. What you see here is the 2009 version of Duke Nukem Forever. This was before Gearbox took over DNF and the franchise, so it was all developed by 3DRealms. You might find it interesting to know that all the areas, bosses, weapons and enemies seen in this gameplay, barring the slot machine, are also in the final version, as well as the weapon system and the regenerating health, with barely any changes to the structure. The "The Doctor who cloned me" DLC on the other hand is all Gearbox' work. It plays much better, which is why I trust that they can still make a good entry to the series.
FUCKING BROTHERS IN ARMS. YOU FUCKS YOU LEFT US ON A GOD DAMN CLIFF HANGAR.

If yes, then I agree, I'd much rather have played this than the DNF we got in the end. It was the first really half-finished version too (after a bunch of mock-ups), and had they released this iteration, it might have been as great as Duke 3D. In any case though, Gearbox had no real part in what DNF became in the end.

It was reported to be late-development footage of pre-gearbox DNF. But now I can't find it, so that point doesn't really matter much.

It was one of the videos that were unlockable in DNF.
Honestly, DNF development got rebooted at least 3 or 4 times because George Broussard, in charge of the game's development, kept looking at other engines and the changing industry and then forcing all the game's development to restart from near-scratch. And notably, Yahtzee was actually asked at one point to offer a script idea for DNF, who played up Duke as an ironic character for comedy's sake. The developers all thought it was cool, but George basically said 'this isn't really Duke' and rejected it. And then they sent Yahtzee back a revised version that took all of the irony out of the character and made everything else around him silly, to which he obviously declined. It says something considering the final product we got played Duke completely straight, and the result was a game that plays up 90's machoism in 2011 to spectacular failure.

Funny, going through these videos you can kind of see how it changed shape. This is probably the most updated of the 2001 iteration of DNF. I hope they release the development builds at some point in the future, although this being Gearbox, I won't get my hopes up.
