I've been thinking of buying one for a while, but I want to know -- if I buy it, is it not gonna work on my computer for some reason? I'm running a Dell Dimension E310 if that's of any importance to my question.
I'd be worrying about your PSU.

What is that?
The power source unit.
Power supply unit.
Also you'll need to make sure your motherboard can take PCI-E and not AGP.
Might want a decent amount of ram (atleast 2G) if your PSU can handle it in the first place.
Google the specs of your computer to find out your PSU wattage,
and how much extra there is left over for your card.
Yeah, that computer has a 230 watt power supply, a generic 9800gt needs at least 400. You do have a PCI-E slot though.

Why would you need 2GB of RAM?
Its handy for ME when doing HDR maps, whenever I load Lost Coast my usage goes from 20% to 48% while loading, thats with 4G
Yes?
And?
Vista is set up to use as much RAM as it can.
Which is why you should use the 7RC :fuckyou:
@OP is this your PC?
[img_thumb]http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3100/en/sm/about02.jpg[/img_thumb]
if it is, according to http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3100/en/sm/specs0.htm#wp1052310 it only has a PCI and a PCI-Ex1 slot, where any halfdecent graphics card will need a PCI-Ex16 slot
so no, it isn't compatible with everything, as a PC might not have the right motherboard expansion slots, the Power Supply Unit might not produce enough to power it, or the rest of the components might be outdated enough that it just isn't worth it anyway
Which is why you should use the 7RC :fuckyou:
7 uses SuperFetch too.
Notice the :fuckyou:
7 uses SuperFetch too.
sshh, the bandwagoners might lose one of their reasons for hating vista but loving 7
and we'd hate that now wouldn't we
Even with superfetch on, 7 is a lot more responsive than vista.

No, it doesn't 'need' 400W.

Theoretically (yes I spelled that right, fags), it needs 400W to power at ideal performance.
You can use it, but with SEVERE performance penalties.
@ SomeFaggot:
Not really, let's say you've got a good 350W PSU that can also deliver the correct amperage. The card will run perfectly fine. Go look up some 9800GT reviews that include power consumption benches.
@ FFStudios:
That sort of advice does not help anyone.
But of course most people aren't going to purchase a PSU below 400W, that isn't really going to leave them with much wiggle room as far as upgrading is concerned. Although it's incorrect to just say that a 9800GT will refuse to run at all if it's not hooked up to a PSU that is >=400W.

400W is for a computer with a QX7704 super quad
I used to run my 4870 HD with a 300W PSU and they recommend 500W.
All depends on the quality of the unit.
Why would you need 2GB of RAM?
I've got 4gb. Helps with running multiple processes, or rendering simulations, etc.
I'm running an 8800GT on 400W
when I ordered it, they told me I'd need a £150 700W (shit brand) PSU :awesome:
I've got 4gb. Helps with running multiple processes, or rendering simulations, etc.
I have 4 gigs too. :3:
Even though i still use XP, i might reinstall my PC this week and move into windows 7.

Don't 64 bit operating systems also use more ram for tasks that otherwise wouldn't on a 32 bit OS?
Thanks for all the helpful input, and yes reapaninja, that's my computer. Since I can't use the 9800gt, what is the best video card that is compatible with my computer? I have close to $300 that I was saving up for my 9800gt.
Also, if this is any importance, I'm running 32 bit Windows XP Media Center Edition and have a dual boot with Xubuntu and Puppy Linux. (Which is 3, but dual boot is a good enough phrase.)
If you could, I'd say get a new PSU and a 4850.
You *might* need a Dell-compatible PSU, but I'm not sure.
I'll look into that. Can anybody give me one that I 100% know will work? And if so, can you provide a link to where to buy one at?
