Golden Globe Award winner Michael C. Hall is Dexter Morgan, a mildly sarcastic forensics expert with a penchant for neatness and isolation. A brilliant blood spatter analyst, he spends his days examining crimes for Miami Metro, sometimes as the deciding factor in the cracking of a case. But Dexter holds a dark secret: he possesses violent urges that compell him to kill. By night he masquerades as an elusive serial killer who binds his victims in plastic sheeting before taking their lives, cutting up their bodies and disposing of them in the ocean on his boat, the Slice of Life. Dexter lives by a strict code of ethics that prevents him from murdering anyone who is not deserving of his punishment, an ethic that has acted as both his saving grace and a lifelong burden. His modus operandi and tendency to slip out of danger without a trace has earned him the nickname "The Bay Harbor Butcher" by law enforcement. Dexter rationalizes his bloodthirst in the form of a Dark Passenger, a sort of split personality that takes the form of a benevolent, though rather cold and calculating, figure of guidance.
Dexter is a major control freak and a perfectionist with almost superhuman attention to detail. He delicately balances his double life under a "mask of sanity," much like other fictional and real psychopaths. When in control, Dexter is able to pass himself off as a completely normal individual, going out with friends, maintaining relationships, and even looking after kids. This constant facade, combined with the continuous evolution of his methods over several years, has given him an almost godlike understanding of psychology, which he uses constantly by acting as multiple "characters" to remain inconspicuous and untraceable around targets.
Though Dexter himself acts alone, the series supports a cast of recurring main characters with unique personalities and AAA-quality acting. The show has become popular enough to draw some relatively popular names including Jimmy Smitts, John Lithgow, and most recently, Yvonne Strahovski.

Jennifer Carpenter as Deborah Morgan
Dexter's adopted sister, Deb is a headstrong and impulsive cop with a tendency towards alcohol and foul launguage. She frequently consults Dexter for advice and, with his help, rises through the ranks of Miami Homicide to become an independent and responsible detective. She has broken many important cases throughout the series by sheer determination and has an uncompromising view of justice, unlike her brother. Her emotional dependence sometimes becomes a problem for her and has led to more than a few "interesting" relationships.

James Remar as Harry Morgan
Harry Morgan, Dexter's adoptive father and a former homicide detective, was first to spot Dexter's passion for human vivisection and helped his son channel his homicidal impulses into a more constructive pursuit: vigilante justice. Long dead and now appearing only to Dexter in visions, Harry tries hard to keep his twisted son on the path he set for him via the Code, a set of rules Dexter must live and kill by.

David Zayas as Angel Batista
A fellow homicide detective, Angel is a genuinely good-natured individual and works closely with Dexter and the team on their various forensics cases. He's known Dexter for years, and while the compassionate Angel is known to be forgiving, even he has his limits. One of the oldest detectives in Homicide, he sometimes acts as a mentor to others and always has useful input on a case.

Lauren Vélez as Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta
Politically ruthless and media savvy, LaGuerta attained her position in Homicide through blackmail and deceit. She holds a large influence over the department and rarely compromises for others during a particularly hard case. Her unwavering determination often lands her in hot water with her co-workers, who question her motives. Regardless, she's not above bending the rules to get what she wants, particularly when it comes to the questions she has involving Dexter.

Desmond Harrington as Joey Quinn
Miami Metro's roguishly charming Detective Quinn acts as an intimidating factor for Dexter, constantly on the edge of what may be considered legal. Quinn, though adamant he is not a "dirty cop," has several underworld connections and has served as an enforcer for several criminal organizations in the past. In later seasons he developed a habit of drinking irresponsibly and sleeping around. After his antics started to have real consequences on his ability to do his job, Quinn promised to clean up his act, a promise which he often fails to deliver on.

C.S. Lee as Vincent Masuka
Always quick with an inappropriate remark, Masuka is the wisecracking Miami Metro forensic investigator who works alongside Dexter in both the lab and in the field. A master of both innuendo and crime scene investigations, Masuka may hit on anything that moves but he's essentially harmless and can be counted on for real emotional support when the time calls for it. Dexter often uses him for cover at work while he attends to his personal matters, the motives and frequency of which Masuka neither questions nor suspects. He harbors a long-time unrequited crush on Deb.

Written by Jeff Lindsay, the NYT bestseller actually preceded the Showtime series. The first book in the ongoing series virtually mirrors the events of the show, but that's pretty much where the similarities end, as Lindsay takes the character off into some rather odd subjects, including cannibalism, demonic possession, and probably rape. Also Deb gets pregnant, which I guess was probably coming anyway. Probably due to the radical differences, Lindsay has remained virtually anonymous while his character has gained international fame, which is kinda depressing. He wrote about it on his site.Regardless, they're still okay books, just as long as you aren't expecting an expansion of the show. The Games
[t]http://www.touchgen.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/dexter.jpg[/t]
The show has spawned two phone-based games developed by Icarus Studios, aptly titled Dexter: The Game and Dexter: The Game 2. The games play from a third person perspective with authentic voice acting from the cast of the show, including Michael C. Hall. The first game follows loosely the main plot of Season 1, whereas the second is a general open-world adventure. Both games are massive flops IMO and really not worth the $6-$16 price tag, but of course this is to be expected from brand spinoffs made for iOS. The first game does sport some beautiful cutscenes and incredibly authentic art assets, though.

Have a killer day.
It will be the same as the last 3 seasons. Huge excitement before, tiny bits of hope at the beginning, and complete disappointment at the end. You know it guys.
Doesn't mean we can't enjoy the ride, even if it has claimed lives in the past and deemed unsafe by the authorities.
Still can't believe they [sp]killed of Isaak in such a bullshit way, he had a lot of potential as a character.[/sp] Fuck this show.
I used to like Quinn, mostly because he looks like Nick from L4D2, but this last season where it becomes apparent that [sp]he took bribes and assisted the mobsters with drug deals, and gets involved in their latest crap[/sp] made me lose nearly all respect for him.
You realize that the season they introduced him in was one where he was stealing money from crime scenes, right

IIRC the plotline ends up going nowhere too.
IIRC the plotline ends up going nowhere too.
Just like any other Quinn's plotline.
Remember that time when Quinn was after Dexter, trailers were suggesting that it will be main plotline for season, and he was sure something was wrong.
Or when Quinn was fucking Debra.
Or when Quinn and Batista were partners and there was a small chance for character development.
They could kill him, and exactly nothing would change.
The Final Season
At last
Fuck, I was just about to post that.
[sp]Dexter is going to coerce Deb into killing him to make it seem like she cracked the BHB case. Calling it now.[/sp]
[sp]Did Dexter ever kill the flower girl?[/sp]
Nope
So I finished watching season 3 of Dexter a few days ago, and I cant understand why it is so popular.
The concept is cool but it isn't really that interesting, plus I find it really hard to relate to Dexter's character - [sp]did any of you enjoy seeing Doax die?
I really had more sympathy to doax other than Dexter.[/sp] Oh and Debra is so stupid and annoying. She has a new boyfriend like every few episodes.
It's "Doakes" bro
and I think the acting has got worse and worse each season for everyone apart from Dexter and Harry
Can't embed, but there's a new trailer here
http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/04/19/dexter-final-season-trailer/
This show should have ended at season 5 or 6.
At season 5 with him going berserk after certain event.
So, begin the speculation as to who's most deserving of a spin off

Trinity.
Masuka
Isaac Sirko.
That depends, if they keep the same writers I'm not interested in a spin-off at all.
That depends, if they keep the same writers I'm not interested in a spin-off at all.
Well, bringing writers from 1-4 would be a much better decision, than bringing folks from 5-8.
The only reasonable spin off i see happening would be focused on Brian before S1
Stopped watching after the masterpiece that was 4 should I bother catching up on 5-8?
I'd say catch up on them.
There not as good as 1-4 but I'm the sort of person who has to finish something when I start it so I would say go for it.
