After playing this game enough I can safely say it falls to same issue that their last game had: It looks nice but the overall gameplay feels really lacking. Gunplay is stiff and you can't aim up while running forward, and you can't aim in diagonal directions. Plus going for the monster hunt route of constantly revisiting stages for gathering/boss killing quests quickly feels like a chore.
It's a shame too because the weapon customization system is fucking neat.

The problem with that though is basic baddies have pretty big lifepools, whereas in Monster Hunter there's usually only one or two large monsters at a time you deal with, with the occasional ankle biter you can swat aside. But with Mercenary Kings even basic badguys can hold you up for a few seconds at a time, making gathering quests a royal pain in the ass. Those shield dudes are the biggest offenders.
But at least Merc Kings doesn't have mining ore veins like Monster Hunter, so I can be thankful for that. :v:
