http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-23143236
A change in the law to bring in an opt-out organ donation system has been voted through by Welsh assembly members. Wales will become the first UK country to adopt a process where individuals will be presumed to have consented for their organs to be donated unless they opt out. Ministers want to increase the number of donors for transplant. The new presumed consent system could come into force by 2015.
have they been firebombed yet? if just being a mosque is enough to get attacked, i can only imagine how pissed off some crazy people are over this
It's made of people!
I think either this, or a system where you have to make a decision one way or another when you get your health card (that's where you put the sticker here, not sure if this applies to Wales as well), is better than the current opt-in system
i'ev just read the book "Nudges" and it pretty much shows that this automatically causes an increase of >50% in the number of people who sign up
Muh kidneys
Muh kidneys
bu-bu-but i'll NEED them when i'm rotting
I hope this happens in England too. I took months to get around to opting in for organ donation, I imagine it is the same for a lot of people.
Opt-out systems are much better. It's likely the majority of people are impartial on the topic of organ donations. They don't care enough to want to keep them at death, but also don't care enough to go through the trouble of opting in in the first place.
Sure, why not. More Organs for sick people who need em. As long as opting out isn't too much effort this shouldn't take away any liberty.
bu-bu-but i'll NEED them when i'm rotting
Here we go, lets start immediately shitposting right off the bat not like anyone would want actual discussion right
wales estimates they'll get a grand total of an extra 15 donations from this system, providing 45 additional organs.

At least I think I still am. Isn't one of the major arguments against organ donation something to do with allowing patients to die in order to harvest them? I don't believe it for a second, but I do wonder where that idea stemmed from.

Oh right this is after one dies. Sorry for a second I was absolutely against this because the scenario where dudes in white coats come up and say "we need your left lung, now" scares me. 'but I need my lungs.' "you can live with one" 'I also never consented to this' "Yeah you did, its an opt-out system, come on lets get you prepped for surgery"
When I went to renew my bike tax online it came up with something to do with organ donation. I updated my details to make sure all my organs are donated in the case of my death. Having some part of me alive inside of someone when I'm dead is most likely the closet I'll come to being a zombie, and plus someone gets to live, it's a win win!
Considering that they'll do me no good when I'm rotting, and that I can technically haunt whoever they go into for the hell of it since they're technically pieces of my corpse, I'm all for the idea of my organs being ripped out the moment I permanently flatline. All joking aside, this is probably not too bad for anyone unless your personal beliefs or religion say you can't do this. The only things that'll possibly physically suffer from you donating your organs are the worms and bacteria who would otherwise eat them, and I'm sure they'll move on from their heartbreak to a nice warm cowpat somewhere.
You'd have to be a right twat to opt out.
I wonder how better the world would be if EVERYONE donated their organs and cremated every time.
I hope this happens in England too. I took months to get around to opting in for organ donation, I imagine it is the same for a lot of people.
I agree, the only thing that was stopping me was thinking "I'll do it later", and when I got round to it I was surprised to find it only took about 2 minutes online. Opt out is the way forward
I wonder how better the world would be if EVERYONE donated their organs and cremated every time.
my grandmother said she'd haunt us for the rest of our lives if we have her cremated.
plus it's cool to think you're kind of still alive (in several different people) while you're dead, it's comforting in a weird way
bu-bu-but i'll NEED them when i'm rotting
Reminds me, here's a short convo I had a couple of years ago on another forum:
No, I think it's utterly obscene for the state to presume ownership of a person's corpse.

Tell me again why people put their personal ideals before the wellbeing of others

If people weren't like that, everything from murder, torture, slavery or theft could very easily be justified. Thank **** it isn't, despite your short-sighted irritation. The overall wellbeing of the public may be well served by killing people. Equally, the 'ticking bomb' situation so loved by theorists demonstrates when public utility is served by torture. It's also hard to deny that countries like Zimbabwe were better off when the black majority were not included (or only slightly included) in the democratic process. In each of these cases, doing what's right - and avoiding being utterly morally repugnant - requires putting aside 'wellbeing' and upholding principles, values and ideology. You have to be able to to say, in many occasions, 'that may be desirable, but it is not morally right'. I don't see how there's any dispute whatsoever on this issue.
i dunno

Dunno how much use it's gonna be when it comes to livers, I mean Llanelli's known for running out of beer because they beat the All Blacks in a rugby match back in the 70's :v: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/celtic/2380369.stm
Here we go, lets start immediately shitposting right off the bat not like anyone would want actual discussion right
fun is not allowed in this section it's serious shit, guys
You'd have to be a right twat to opt out.
I'd imagine non-donor shaming is also quite a benefit, specially if they make a specific booth with a big fat "NON DONOR REGISTRATION" sign people have to line up at
wales estimates they'll get a grand total of an extra 15 donations from this system, providing 45 additional organs.
so 3 extra spare organs for each citizen of wales
You'd have to be a right twat to opt out.
Could be for religious reasons or something like that
Could be for religious reasons or something like that
are there any religions that actually forbid organ donation I know some forbid receiving transplants/blood transfusions but do they also say you can't give them away after you die
