Libya's National Assembly has voted to make Sharia, Islamic law, the foundation of all legislation and state institutions in the country. The immediate scope of the General National Congress''s (GNC) decision on Wednesday was not clear, but a special committee will review all existing laws to guarantee they comply with Islamic law. "Islamic law is the source of legislation in Libya," the GNC said in a statement after the vote. "All state institutions need to comply with this." The decision may impact banking, criminal and financial laws. One specific reform might include a shift to Islamic finance regulations that avoid interest and pure speculation.
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2013/12/libya-assembly-votes-sharia-law-2013124153217603439.html
Fuck sake Libya, everything was going so well
A few steps forward, a few hundred back.
Wary as I am about this, there's the possibility they're only going to keep the reasonable bits? I don't really believe it either.

Of course, a more liberal interpretation would mean that you only get stoned to death for making so-called blasphemous comments against Allah if they have photographic and video proof of the incident taking place.

Meet the new boss, same as the old. When will they learn?
Maybe Gaddafi wasn't so bad after all.
As with many countries of the region, the debate in Libya has never really been about whether sharia should be implemented, it's about how it should be implemented. Mainly whether it should be defined as the principle source of legislation (as it is in the interim constitution) or the only source of legislation (as it is under this law). Here's what Libyans think (source) The decline in support for 'sharia as the only source' may be a result of that idea's association with widely hated groups like Ansar al-Sharia This law isn't permanent because we're still in a transitional stage, so the debate will likely be revived again when the constitutional commission is elected early next year. It's worth noting though that although to us sharia law is a huge deal and should be avoided at all costs, to Libyans the sharia debate is a fairly minor issue:
Maybe Gaddafi wasn't so bad after all.
Sharia law was part of Gaddafi's legal system, in fact in his Green Book he wrote "The natural law of any society is grounded in either tradition (custom) or religion. Any other attempt to draft law outside these two sources is invalid and illogical."
We'll see what happens, it was never not going to be an issue.
Good.
