Called "Tailored Access Operations" (TAO), this department devises special methods for special targets.

That category includes surveillance of neighboring Mexico, and in May 2010, the division reported its mission accomplished. A report classified as "top secret" said: "TAO successfully exploited a key mail server in the Mexican Presidencia domain within the Mexican Presidential network to gain first-ever access to President Felipe Calderon's public email account." According to the NSA, this email domain was also used by cabinet members, and contained "diplomatic, economic and leadership communications which continue to provide insight into Mexico's political system and internal stability." The president's office, the NSA reported, was now "a lucrative source."

This operation, dubbed "Flatliquid," is described in a document leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, which SPIEGEL has now had the opportunity to analyze. The case is likely to cause further strain on relations between Mexico and the United States, which have been tense since Brazilian television network TV Globo revealed in September that the NSA monitored then-presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto and others around him in the summer of 2012. Peña Nieto, now Mexico's president, summoned the US ambassador in the wake of that news, but confined his reaction to demanding an investigation into the matter.
That's a pretty massive affront to Mexico.
Oh joy, why would they ever do that... Now we basically pissed off Mexico, which is right below us.
There's some things that shouldn't be leaked, atleast yet :c-- i don't like the possible reprocussions
What the hell kind of a name for an operation is "Flatliquid"? I bet they're using the name generator from Dwarf Fortress.
all in the name of Justice
What the hell kind of a name for an operation is "Flatliquid"? I bet they're using the name generator from Dwarf Fortress.
That's basically how they make these names. If they gave it something that had some relative meaning it might give something about it away.
There's some things that shouldn't be leaked, atleast yet :c-- i don't like the possible reprocussions
So basically it's okay to do bad things if nobody knows about it?
So basically it's okay to do bad things if nobody knows about it?
governments work in strange ways you probably don't want to know the secrets of our government or any other government for that matter. you're probably better off not knowing except canada fuck canada
So basically it's okay to do bad things if nobody knows about it?
Yes actually in some cases. Complete transparency isn't always the best choice.
We're really mad, we're even planning to withdraw support, and stop the privatization of our oil. Why would you guys do that to us? Heart broken, thought we were buddies.
We're really mad, we're even planning to withdraw support, and stop the privatization of our oil. Why would you guys do that to us? Heart broken, thought we were buddies.
Don't worry, the NSA spies on our politicians too..
The most bitter truth is always better than the sweetest lie, in my opinion. The more we know about the sordid shit our leaders and their subordinates are really up to behind the scenes, the less they'll be able to fuck us over without us knowing. And I'm not talking about Illuminati-lizardman conspiracy bullshit, here. I'm talking about the shit going on right in front of us, like politicians getting paid to lay about and whine like spoiled children, as well as the crap the NSA is pulling. We've been mostly ignorant of what's really going on behind the scenes in our government for a long time, and look where that's gotten us. Our government almost fucked over the entire world economy because the fucking idiots we pay to do nothing were having a slapfight over already-established legislature. Our government is actively fucking with both other nations and its own people for both laughs and unnecessary advantages. Our government is doing whatever the hell it wants with nearly no control from the people, despite that very same kind of government (or at least the perception of it being that way) being the main goddamn reason we fought for independence to form our own government in the first place! Might be a touch dramatic to say this, but I feel it's safe to say our government's become what it was made to defy and be better than, an unstoppable force that the population it rules can't truly control or fight back against in any meaningful way. Like I said, a touch dramatic, but it does fit surprisingly well, doesn't it? Basically, we're getting screwed no matter what, but I'd at least like to know what's getting shoved in, goddamn it. Being ignorant of what our government is up to only means we don't know how badly it's screwing us over, and it means being unable to yell to the world about it or otherwise fight back against it. All you're doing by saying we shouldn't know or refusing to listen is letting the bullshit continue behind your back willingly. If you personally want to ignore the U.S. government and live without thinking about all this depressing and uncontrollable bullshit it's doing, that's fine and I don't blame you. But don't screw over everyone else by suggesting no one should know.
We're really mad, we're even planning to withdraw support, and stop the privatization of our oil. Why would you guys do that to us? Heart broken, thought we were buddies.
I always see Mexico as the U.S.'s closest friend. This is an outrage.
governments work in strange ways you probably don't want to know the secrets of our government or any other government for that matter. you're probably better off not knowing except canada fuck canada
Except for aliens Tell me all about those aliens I need to know
Don't all countries spy on other countries?
Except for aliens Tell me all about those aliens I need to know
adalia rose is among us
adalia rose is among us
Thank you
I always see Mexico as the U.S.'s closest friend. This is an outrage.
Saying that is going to make Canadians sad. [editline]20th October 2013[/editline]
Oh joy, why would they ever do that... Now we basically pissed off Mexico, which is right below us.
What are they going to do, they can't even contain the drug cartels in their country.
What are they going to do, they can't even contain the drug cartels in their country.
ummm... Not keep the drug cartels in their country?
what the hell guys now Im so angry that I feel like living illegaly in USA without paying taxes
We're really mad, we're even planning to withdraw support, and stop the privatization of our oil. Why would you guys do that to us? Heart broken, thought we were buddies.
I wish our politicians had some national pride like you guys. Like enough to stand up to America like it did in the past. Assuming this post is serious.
I always see Mexico as the U.S.'s closest friend. This is an outrage.
We've never really gotten along with Mexico. We fought a couple wars with them for territory in the mid 1800s, and during World War 2 and the Cold War they harbored some of our enemies. Even today, they like to blame a lot of their cartel violence on us, and we blame a lot of our drug problems on them. I've always considered the United States to be best friends with the United Kingdom. Maybe Japan and Canada too. [editline]21st October 2013[/editline] Although yeah the NSA just fucked everything up.
We're really mad, we're even planning to withdraw support, and stop the privatization of our oil. Why would you guys do that to us? Heart broken, thought we were buddies.
We're sorry. We're just going through a rough patch right now. We don't expect you to forgive us, just please know that we're sorry.
Wow, come on, that's just rude. But somehow I don't think there will be a notorious reaction to this.
The NSA has to be the worst covert government agency in history. Seriously, they can't hide fuckin' anything they do. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.
So basically, a spy agency pretty much focused on electronic spying techniques did its job exactly as anyone would expect. I'd be more surprised to hear "NSA never tried to access foreign power's information." I never knew there were so many Mexican members on Facepunch! Usually I only see U.S., U.K., and Canadian members. But on topic, yeah fuck the NSA. Keeping tabs on foreign politicians is one thing, hacking into an official account for complete access is another.
But on topic, yeah fuck the NSA. Keeping tabs on foreign politicians is one thing, hacking into an official account for complete access is another.
I think gaining access to a foreign leaders personal communications is a pretty impressive achievement, given how electronic intelligence is basically their entire purpose.
