http://www.pcper.com/news/Processors/Report-No-Stock-Cooler-Bundled-Intel-Skylake-K-Unlocked-CPUs
A report from Chinese-language site XFastest contains a slide reportedly showing Intel's cooling strategy for upcoming retail HEDT (High-end Desktop) Skylake "K" processors. Typically Intel CPUs (outside of the current high-end enthusiast segment on LGA2011) have been packaged with one of Intel's ubiquitous standard performance air coolers, and this move to eliminate them from future unlocked SKUs makes sense for unlocked "K" series processors. The slide indicates that a 135W solution will be recommended, even if the TDP of the processor is still in the 91-95W range.
good. If you have a K processor and an intel stock cooler you need to re-evaluate your life choices. a hyper 212 evo costs just $30
either that or come with those intel branded water coolers they did in the past
Yeah, if you try to use an unlocked CPU with out a good aftermarket cooler you are risking a lot of trouble. It's better to just get a nice cooler aftermarket for good use. I'd personally recommend a Noctua NH-D14. Bulky as fuck, but it always has kept my 4770k down 10c to 20c from the usual stock fans.
Nice of intel to do that, stock coolers just get left in the box and forgotten about, or left in the box and forgotten about then recycled 10 years later
Why don't they instead just bundle them with a really good cooler
I've never had a problem with my temps on a stock Intel cooler? I've never overclocked but my temperatures have always been fine
Why don't they instead just bundle them with a really good cooler
Because that would drive the price up, which would be annoying for people who already have an adequate cooling setup.
I've never had a problem with my temps on a stock Intel cooler? I've never overclocked but my temperatures have always been fine
The K series are for overclockers, though, there's no reason to get a K CPU if you're not planning on overclocking
I always put stock coolers on older PCs that need a new cooler since I have a fuck ton of them.
Why don't they instead just bundle them with a really good cooler
Just don't bundle them with a cooler, it costs less that way and you have greater choice.
it costs less that way
fat chance
Just don't bundle them with a cooler, it costs less that way and you have greater choice.
Yeah but I'm kind of dumb and this is going to result in me forgetting to buy a CPU cooler.
fat chance
Yeah, i'm rather doubting Intel's going to lower the price, what with AMD currently sucking as a competitor. At least it'll cut down on waste a tiny bit.
Yeah but I'm kind of dumb and this is going to result in me forgetting to buy a CPU cooler.
Your mobo will shutdown in the case of an overheating CPU.. So, even if you are a colossally ignorant of PC's, they're pretty hard to break.
Yeah, i'm rather doubting Intel's going to lower the price, what with AMD currently sucking as a competitor. At least it'll cut down on waste a tiny bit.
I'm pretty sure Intel has always sold their CPU's without a cooler for ~5 eur less
Why don't they instead just bundle them with a really good cooler
different form factors / setups
good. When I need to overclock more I'll probably guy another cooler but for now my CPU is more than enough.
This has been standard procedure since two iterations ago, not sure why a headline is necessary.
man you guys blow so much money on cooling i just run my cpu under the tap and it works wonders Sent from my iPhone
This has been standard procedure since two iterations ago, not sure why a headline is necessary.
Not at all though? Retail unlocked Haswell and Haswell refresh chips are all sold with a stock cooler. As was Ivy, as was Sandy.
Nope. NE and TD have been sellings ->EEs<- without coolers for two iterations, clearly labeled as not containing a cooling fan. Same for Fry's. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=extreme&N=100007671&isNodeId=1

Not even the article. They specifically said that this is a first for consumer chips, not the 2011/enthusiast socket.
future unlocked SKUs makes sense for unlocked "K" series processors
If you bothered paying attention to the context, they're applying what has already existed from one channel to an entire series, ergo nothing sensationalist about it.
Why don't they instead just bundle them with a really good cooler
Because then you'd be paying for a really good cooler, and you'd loose money if you don't want to use them. There will be people who want a better cooler, or a smaller cooler, or a water cooler, or are building into a flat case or something.
I have an a10-5800k with a hyper 212 and I don't even overclock. Its just such a goog idea to have a good cooler, not only for a longer chip life, but it'll also last for a long time and be reusable on future builds (I hope)
good. If you have a K processor and an intel stock cooler you need to re-evaluate your life choices. a hyper 212 evo costs just $30
I'd rather use Be Quiet! Shadow Rock 2.
I'd rather use Be Quiet! Shadow Rock 2.
what the fuck, is your computer a nuclear reactor? That thing is monstrous.
Good, this looks a lot better anyway: [t]http://benchmarkreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Cooler-Master-V8-GTS.jpg[/t]
