I just have a quick question, because this is the 2nd time this has happened to me with Win7 Pro x64. After a Windows Update fails, it says try again and brings me back to the update screen, but the update that failed is no longer listed as part of the 'available' installs. Does this mean that it reinstalled in the background? Else, how can I properly reinstall the update after a failure?
If an update fails, once you recheck for updates, it should be there again. If it isn't, it's been installed.
Sometimes an update "fails" because another update in the list supercedes it.
Example:
Let's say you have three patches; Patch A, B, and C.
Patch A fixes a certain problem. Patch B fixes another problem. Patch C fixes a 3rd problem but ALSO the problem patch B fixed.
If your install order was say, CBA, then patch C would install, patch B would "fail" since it's no longer needed, and then patch A would install.
If it failed and it isn't in the list anymore, then don't worry about it.
