Quake Live, arguably the most enduring free-to-play first-person shooter, is no longer free-to-play. An update published yesterday on the game's Steam page announced the arrival of Steamworks integration and the termination of the Quake Live subscription service. That means friend lists, chat, lobbies, voice chat, server browsers and statistics now all run through Steam.
I'd expect a visual and audio overhaul for the money. Supposedly If you had the game on steam already you can email them your account name to get a free key. https://archive.is/wTjZO
I played it few years ago and last year I found my account deleted, registered again. Now I downloaded the steam version 2 days ago to play yet again and had to create a third account. Guess it will be tied to Steam account now :v:
This is worthwhile - a paid subscription service for a game like Quake Live makes no sense. Shame about the wiping of stats, but full steamworks integration is worthwhile. If you don't have it yet, I'd download it and play it to make sure it stays in your account. Apparently the process is automatic if it's already registered to your steam account - it's just for new users.
I can still launch it, and I can seemingly do all the things I wasn't allowed to do before. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/965202/ShareX/2015/10/Quake_Live_2015-10-27_17-10-35.png[/t] Here's me starting a match as opposed to being forced to join one.
they removed all of the sub perks since its not F2P anymore, I'm guessing you already had the game on steam?
I did indeed. I did not spend a dime.
hell yeah free quake LIVE BUDDI (since i already had it downloaded)
Now that there's a workshop i might try to mod the game. I bet there's still a way to load native code mods. I might resurrect my managed code bindings.
For starters, it's unclear whether id Software or publisher Bethesda ever gave forewarning that the game will now attract a US$10 charge – not that it really matters to current players anyway, since anyone with the game in their Steam library already won't have to pay.
if you already had it downloaded or installed you don't have to pay. if you have an account that hasn't been deleted, you can contact bethesda/id support and attempt to get a copy.
Any chance there was that I was going to play this was abandoned when they removed it from web browsers. Now they're charging $10 on Steam? Give me a break, I'll play the original Quake.
For fuck's sake, I was playing it this week from the launcher off steam. I can't believe I have to pay now because I didn't download it from steam.

I hope this boosts Reflex's sales, I'd rather see money go to developers who are actively developing a AFPS instead of ones milking an ancient one.
I randomly decided to download it last year and never played it. Maybe now I should try it now it since it's ten bucks now.

I wouldn't mind for a HD revamp of all the character models, weapons and maps as long as it was priced reasonably.
Neat, so apparently since I played it months ago it still counts as "in my inventory" so I got a copy of it, even if my account has been deleted since then.
That one's also $10?
I have it on CD.
Play Reflex. It's free.
Play Reflex. It's free.
uhhhh reflex is not free lol. it's $10.
Is it any closer to quake 3 arena now? last time i played quake live, everything was just a bit off. announcer, sounds, gore, etc. [editline]28th October 2015[/editline] all i want is quake 3 arena with more modern, updated support.
Its really kind of weird seeing something that was F2P with optional premium apparently do well enough to go B2P. I'm more used to the opposite, where a game does so poorly that it has to go F2P with "optional" premium.
The devs have fucked this game so badly this is pretty much their last option. The community has pretty much completed died as they have not done anything to improve the game/competitive scene in the years it has been out.
I guess I'll just stick to Reflex then.

I was so disappointed when i first saw the "teleport" effects they added when you kill someone...
Workshop support and Steamworks? Sounds well worth those $10, imo.
Workshop support and Steamworks? Sounds well worth those $10, imo.
For $10, ten bucks less than Quake 3 Arena by itself, you basically get Quake 3 Arena (minus the singleplayer 'story' that was plot-less tournament bot matches), the ability to host servers, no paywalls, the Workshop and Steamworks support, and other factors. There's already classic rules gamemodes on the Workshop, among others, and there's a sizeable number of maps and a few gamemodes that weren't in vanilla Q3A. Pretty much only the interface may not be one's cup of tea, but otherwise if you're going to buy Quake 3 on Steam (if you somehow didn't own it already), the only reason I'd see getting the original is for the larger mods, we have yet to see if something like, say, Generations Arena would be able to be ported over. Although I don't think the Team Arena content's in there, not sure.
Wait what, you have to buy it? I already had it downloaded, and I just played a match. Did I just get it for free? :v:
