Controversial social psychologist J. Philippe Rushton, whose name was indelibly linked with his theories of race and brain size, has died at the age of 68.
Rushton, a professor at the University of Western Ontario since 1977, died Tuesday at the London Health Sciences Centre of Addison’s disease.
The British-born Rushton published more than 200 academic papers and five books during his career but was best known for Race, Evolution and Behavior: A Life History Perspective (see a review here).
The uproar caused by his 1989 paper that led to the book provoked then-Ontario premier David Peterson to say he should be fired. Rushton and environmentalist and geneticist David Suzuki argued the theories in a highly publicized debate in 1989.
Rushton presented his notorious findings to the American Association for Advance of Science convention in January 1989, and was “hit with a hailstorm of hostile questions,” the Star reported at the time.
He contended that three races ranked in 1-2-3 order, with Asians first in brain size, intelligence, family stability, sexual restraint and mental stability, followed by whites and then blacks.
“I was not a great fan of his research,” said UWO Dean Brian Timney, who was the undergraduate chair in the psychology department at the height of the controversy.
“I think his research was flawed. The methodologies were inadequate to support the claims he made.”
Rushton “had taught very little since the 1990s” and in the past decade was exclusively a research professor, Timney told the Star.
“He was a paradox. As an individual, he was a gentleman, always collegial and friendly,” the dean said. But Rushton also “seemed desperate to get the word out” about his views on race and intelligence.
Occupational psychologist Dr. Paul Irwing, who collaborated frequently with Rushton, praised his “trememdous scientific integrity and courage.”
Irwing, a lecturer at the University of Manchester, is himself a controversial figure for his data analysis that concluded men had higher IQs than women, based on a survey of 20,000 test scores.
He called Rushton’s most recent work on a “genetic similarity hypothesis” one of his most important contributions to the field.
The hypothesis, “basically an explanation of altruism,” says people are prepared to die for others because of a similarity in their genes, Irwing said.
“This potentially has applications to describe intergroup conflict in a very powerful way.”
Rushton also promoted his theories through the institute he founded in 1989, Charles Darwin Research.

was just doing some coursework on how university speech codes would ban literature similar to rushton's work and what do you know he kicked the bucket
And nothing of value was lost
Seriously though, I like how he put Asians first :v:

Keeping it real
Which is stupid anyway, because brain size doesn't affect intelligence
rest in peace, you racist biotruth-promoting cock
Which is stupid anyway, because brain size doesn't affect intelligence
?
I thought the bigger the brain the more intelligent the individual, isn't that why humans are smarter than other species due to our brain size?
oh wait this is talking about individuals within the same species
I thought the bigger the brain the more intelligent the individual
I remember reading somewhere that Albert Einstein had a brain that was actually slightly smaller than most people.
This man did great work and his research should have been more widely acknowledged. It's too bad ignorant Christians on this forum resent scientific research and the theory of evolution and berate him from beyond the grave with inane comments acting as though they have more authority on the subject than he. Seriously, some of you should grow up.

racism..
Differences in average IQ among different races = possible, maybe even probably
Does that mean every member of a given race is retarded? Not at all. There's a difference between studying the way race can determine IQ and going around thinking that all black people are on par with chimps in intelligence.
He may have been racist, but his work isn't necessarily.

No, it has to do with the way our brains are put together. Most animals have most of their brains geared toward sensory perception rather than conscious thinking.
Used to be scientists believed brain size was a measure of intelligence, so much so that some would have their brains measured after death. Edward Drinker Cope had his brain measured after he died as a challenge to his personal rival, Othniel Charles Marsh but Marsh never did the same. Supposedly the University of Pennsylvania still has Cope's skull.
I don't think intelligence should matter too much. I know two very intelligent people off the top of my head that didn't get into fantastic universities. The problem with a number of intelligent people is that they don't try because they act like they know everything there is to be known.
Using your potential to work hard is what counts at the end of the day. Talent isn't shit until you use it to master your craft.

You know whatever's true is fucking true, right?
If you're black and you feel bad that a study says that your brain is likely to be small, tough.
I'd heard that it was the brain to body ratio that had an effect on intelligence rather than sheer size, but I could be wrong.

this goes beyond anatomical differences. this guy tried to prove that black people were entirely inferior to white people.

Albert Einstein is not the be-all-and-end-all of intelligence
Have there been many studies into race v intelligence ignoring other variables like environment and such? I'm sure much of the science community would be afraid to delve into that kind of thing because of the stigma associated with racial study in science.
I do recall that those of African descent usually make better runners than swimmer because of evolutionary traits inherited over time that created a different center of gravity for Africans than say Europeans.
surface area is pretty important when dealing with measuring brains, too, not just the general size
usually creatures with wrinkled brains (like humans, for example) are more intelligent than creatures with smooth brains, more cells can fit in a small area

There haven't been many studies at all and most have been dismissed because of the huge race-research taboo. It is really sad that because of political correctness such understanding is bad. If intelligence is somehow affected by race, then you shouldn't be branded racist as long as you have facts to back it up. There is nothing racist about facts.
Besides, it's not impossible, there are plenty of biological differences between races due to millennia of separate evolution.
best way to end racism is just keep breeding till we are down to one version of all races combined.

Although Einstein had a brain that was actually slightly smaller than most people it was actually found that his brain was more dense than anyone which probably makes up for the fact that his brain was slightly smaller.

Whales have brains as large as trucks and they aren't smarter than humans(at least as far as we know).
It's about brain size compared to body size, I believe. A larger body requires a larger brain to carry out the mundane work(movement and shit). Humans have giant brains as far as proportion to body size goes.

He was also believed to be autistic, if I remember right.

Uhhh what?
Uhhh what?
I'm an idiot quoting something I heard in some science documentary one time but probably isn't actually true.
Either way, whales have brains that are far larger than us.

Largest brain belongs to the Sperm whale weighing in at an average 7-8 kg. So essentially seven times the mass of a human brain.
Wow. All you idiots put political correctness before science. It's a known fact that different races have different brain sizes and structures. Yes, there IS an intelligence gap between races (Africans being least and Asians most) but this gap is very small and does not affect much.
