In today "no DRM is really safe" world there's literally no point in not providing a free non-commercial version of your software, regardless of what it is.
If you want to legally go after people who will try to use it commercially without paying up, it's no harder to cope with people abusing the non-commercial version than to cope with pirates.
Meanwhile providing a free version ensures you will have tons of students learning to use your software and then request their future employees to choose it as a platform. It's the perfectly logical investment scheme and everyone wins.

How long are the render times? I'm not sure how useful this will be to the general public, seeing as you need a shit ton of space and hardware to use it even remotely well.
I don't think this is what Pixar/DAS is using right now. AFAIK they had something called "Disney's Hyperion Renderer"

Pixar has massive modeling teams, extremely detailed characters and photorealistic environments. A team of a few people won't be able to create something that complex, so I doubt they'd need the same hardware - let alone one amateur person.

I know Disney at least uses the Hyperion renderer. Apparently the biggest difference is that it's more efficient, because it doesn't shade the scene until all the rays are plotted and grouped. Whatever that means.

Lets you tweak the materials/textures/shaders to a degree without having to retrace everything.
