• Acne suicide risk fuels debate
PEOPLE with severe acne have an increased risk of suicide, researchers said on Thursday in a study adding fuel to a debate about whether acne drugs such as Roche's Accutane prompt suicidal thoughts. Swedish scientists found patients had an additional suicide risk for up to a year after treatment with isotretinoin, the generic version of Accutane, which is commonly prescribed for people with severe acne. 'A more probable interpretation is that the underlying severe acne may best explain the raised risk,' they said, although they could not rule out that it may be 'as a consequence of exposure to the drug'. Accutane, which Swiss drugmaker Roche said last year it would stop selling because of generic competition, has had a controversial history since its 1982 launch. While powerful at clearing acne, the drug has been linked to birth defects if taken during pregnancy and has also been suspected of causing mental side effects, although Roche has vigorously defended personal injury claims in this area. It is now available as generic isotretinoin and sold by drugmakers including Mylan, Ranbaxy and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
Yeah, the drugs used to help fix acne are causing kids to commit suicide, not the relentless taunting by bitchy peers.

I dont see how taking a medicine can make you thin about killing yourself. its because zit faces are not as popular
what kids kill themselves because they look ugly, not because of the drug.

For those of you who say "The medication won't make you depressed" obviously aren't one of the people who has gone through it. I am, and the shit sucked. Even though I don't have acne anymore it was the most painful year old my life. [editline]11th November 2010[/editline]
FP's resident pharmaceutical engineer has spoken. this. As Funcoot said, I'm pretty sure it's the constant ridicule by your peers that makes you want to become an hero, not the treatments (that apparently aren't working). I'm not sure what idiot decided it was the treatments, but I don't think they ever went to high school.
do you understand that the chemicals in that shit fuck with your brain?
I understand it's possible, but it's more likely that it comes from self-esteem issues.
Poor compwhizzi
Glad I never really got any acne
I took accutane for 7 months, the worst side effect I got was occasional nosebleeds, but nothing as bad as in this article. I knew someone who was pretty much a classic example of a pizza face, he took accutane and he's completely clear now. If you can handle the side effects, it's pretty much the final boss of acne treatment.
do you understand that the chemicals in that shit fuck with your brain?
I won't begin to deny that the chemicals fuck with your brain, that is proven. It may even aide suicidal tendencies, but I think the main factor is the ridicule. Constantly getting shot down by girls you like, made fun of by the pretty girls and assholes around school, can really start to fuck with you. High school is very superficial and isn't very enjoyable for people who would need prescription strength drugs for their acne.
There are plenty of plain old ugly motherfuckers who don't seem to have those problems.
yea but acne is different because the person can see there looks get wrse very fast and its more noticeable to them
I understand it's possible, but it's more likely that it comes from self-esteem issues.
It's both. these are chemicals that CAN and DO go into the brain. it's the same with anti-depressants and mood stabilizers. They have an intended purpose, but there are situations where it doesn't go right. I switched between antidepressants for a while before finding one that worked. Some were okay, others drove me to go a week without eating, and vomiting any time I did. Drugs are a myriad of confusing cause and effect scenarios that are impossible to anticipate because the reaction is different for every person.
http://www.helpfulhealthtips.com/Images/A/Accutane-treatment.jpg I'd commit suicide with this face.
I'd use it to frighten young children.
I wasnt saying it cant lead to depression but directly leading to thinking about killing yourself is silly
uhhh
....I don't know what to say this at all....
I'm not really sure how accutane can directly affect mental status, after all, that is what the blood-brain barrier is for (and why vaccines causing autism is bullshit). Unless accutane breaks down into compounds small enough to breech the barrier, but this seems very unlikely.

I don't really get why you don't get this, it's fairly simple.
accutane causing depression is very rare, it's not something that happens to a quarter of patients or anything. and if you get any side effects that you can't handle, just stop taking it...
I dont see how taking a medicine can make you thin about killing yourself. its because zit faces are not as popular
Do you not watch TV? Depression medication have a fuck load of side effects, all of them increase thought of suicides if they are not the right type for you. Go ask your doctor if ______ is right for you!
accutane has a fuck load of permanent side effects, shit's bad yo
