In almost exactly a month the new Nintendo Switch console will be launched worldwide, and yet there’s still a huge number of questions that need to be answered about it. One of those is how the paid-for online subscription service will work, what it will entail, and how much it will cost. Although we may now have our first indication of the pricing. According to Japan-based analyst, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has said the service will cost 2,000 to 3,000 yen per year in Japan. Which works out as the equivalent of £14 ($17) to ($26) £21.
Cheaper then Xbox Live and Playstation Plus
compared to 60 dollars with PSN, that's not bad at all tbh.
Not bad now just confirm it doesn't suck shit like the wii and wiiu's.
That's not all that terrible. And at that price it does makes sense why you only keep the free games for a month:
But it's still dumb that it has a fee in the first place, and requires a phone app for some features.
pretty optimistic about what nintendo are going to do with a paid multiplayer service, especially if it's relatively cheap.
hopefully they actually turn it in to a marketable feature and it doesn't just stay as out of touch and useless as it has been for the last 2 consoles.
Still makes no sense for their features to be so much less inviting than the competition's, but ninty was never about competing head-to-head and now that they're once again faced with that terrible fate they're really trying their best
Thats like, 0.07 cent a day or 2$ a month.
Hopefully we get some stable connections from that, i personally had some issues with Nintendo's servers while playing Splatoon
Its like the pokebank, its bullshit but at least its reasonable

Why is it bullshit? Dedicated servers take money to run. If it only costs 17 bucks a year to play Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon online with actually decent latency then I'll take it in a heartbeat.
Paid online subscriptions suck no matter what, but $20 a year is not too bad I guess, especially compared to PSN's and Xbox's bullshit $60 a year. I can tolerate it.

The Wii and Wii U didn't use dedicated servers, they just used your router as a server.
If you've never played ranked Splatoon you have no idea how bad the WiiU's online is. Some games can mask it (MK8 can as they can easily predict stuff, and smash is generally fine in 1v1) but the WiiU's online is horrendously bad. I'm all for $20 a year if it results in better servers.
People already forgot on Xbox and PS you actually get some games.

What if I don't want the games? Sounds like a gamble compared to a payment deal that is two thirds less.
Not bad but if its that cheap why even bother with it as a requirement for online play to begin with.

I'd rather save the extra money and buy what games I want on the VC.
Okay, now I'm not so irked about paid online anymore. That's like half the price for PSN.

Because running servers ain't cheap. As much as it sucks, Nintendo probably didn't have a choice. At least they're charging for significantly cheaper than their competitors.

Almost a third, actually.
I never expected it to be much myself, especially since we don't get to keep those monthly games.

Most of which have or will appear on Humble Bundle for basically nothing in the long run. :v:

The fact that people are starting to accept paying $60 for a multiplayer game and then pay extra for the actual multiplayer part is some bullshit. It works out on PC, even though you pay nothing for online access, and the reason Nintendo didn't make money on the Wii U isn't because they wasted top dollar on multiplayer servers.
Still, this is a lower price than I expected to be honest.

At the same time you can look at the prices of previous consoles and games (adjusted for inflation, naturally) and factor in the ever-increasing quality both are coming out at.
We're actually paying less and less for these kind of things. :v:

Sometimes they have great months where there's just really good games for every platform. Most months it's a mix of good to meh games you probably already own. Then there are months like this month where I doubt I'll even download any of the games, even for curiosity.
I still cannot believe that voice chat and other feature will be locked to mobile phones. Why, oh why has Nintendo decided to lock it to our mobile phones to use integral parts of a video game console is beyond me.
Is this price point okay? I don't know, it's better than the competition by miles and getting discounts and 2x VC games for a month with heavily discounts to buy them is a good thing. But what's going to make or break this is how badly implemented the mobile companion app is for this system.

This assumes that the buying power of individuals is tied to the value of the currency, which is rarely the case. For most people their pay hasn't increased with inflation, meaning their buying power has decreased over time. So no, we're not paying less an less, the amount we're paying is just holds less value in the larger economy.
Sounds pretty reasonable, I'll take it

It wasn't too bad when Sony first started it as they had 5 or so years of PS3 backlog to put up. But as that ran out they started relying on indie games and repeated a few I think.
The PS4 doesn't quite have that back catalogue of games, so it's not super surprising that you'll be getting either indie games or other less in demand titles. Still happy I managed to get Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Spelunky, Luftrausers, Thief (lol that lasted less than an hour before I got bored), Arkham Asylum and many more actually reasonably decent games on the PS3.
I'll pay it if it means that Smash on wifi won't feel like I'm trying to play with someone on the ISS
Price isn't my concern, it's the quality that's going to make or break this.
Playstation Plus free games are a fucking joke 99% of the time.
From what we know so will be the Switch ones, and you don't even get to keep them.
something tells me the quality of online will not improve
