Oh my god.
My condolences go to any families who are affected by this.
Let's just hope there is a possibility for survivors.
Transcript of what the Malaysian PM said
PM NAJIB RAZAK’S PRESS STATEMENT ON MH370
This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.
Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.
This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.
We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation.
Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.

lets hope they are on the Lost island

Unlikely.
Not really surprised.
Well at first I thought it blew up mid-air for some reason, but yeah.
They also sent out the following message to families:
Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived. As you will hear in the next hour from Malaysia's prime minister, we must now accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean.
Hope they find the CVR & black box soon so we'll know what the fuck went wrong
Let's just hope there is a possibility for survivors.
There is a 0% chance at this time there'd be any survivors, even when the plane hit the water, I doubt anyone survived the hit
This is Desmond Hume's fault

There could have been a possibility it ditched properly but when the doors opened, then it would sink like a stone.

because people haven't survived crazier scenarios (even crash landings into the ocean) and you know the trajectory at which the plane hit the water.

They sent them a fucking text message...

Being stranded at sea for like 2 weeks after a plane crash?
And no matter how shallow the angle at which the plane hit the water, it would have still most likely broken up into pieces and killed the majority on board.
Hope they find the CVR & black box soon so we'll know what the fuck went wrong
They need to find the signal from the pingers first.
So what was up with the ringing phones and shit?
I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.
the news crews just dream of this. they won't leave them be for a few months.
They sent them a fucking text message...
im sure thats not the only way they were contacted

Definitely not most likely

That tone does not mean its connected to the phone.
im sure thats not the only way they were contacted
Personally if someone text me to tell me a relative was dead, I'd be fucking pissed off.
That tone does not mean its connected to the phone.
I guess it depends on the particular network but here is impossible. Ringing means ringing, and the best you can get on unavailable phone is "busy" afaik and that's just temporary, if the phone is unreachable for a while you gonna get an unreachable tone/voice message every time.
If their phone network just keeps fake ringing then that's pretty shit.

The tone means alot of things from their servers trying to locate the phone to it connecting to the phone to waiting for a human to answer the call.
It is up to the telecoms and probably other things I have no clue about (probably other telecoms because roaming) and bouncing around not knowing wtf to do.
A new update:
http://n.mynews.ly/!EB.BO_Bl
All 239 passengers have been declared dead.

yeah but there's a difference between staying within one network, and being bounced to an international network
the states are different, so there's only connecting, connected, and disconnected when you're calling internationally
since the phones were never able to let the cell network know "hi i'm off"
the cell network saw them as online, so they just kept ringing indefinitely

title says declared, the body says 'assumed'
Ditching is incredibly hard to do, the odds of anyone being left are .00000000X
title says declared, the body says 'assumed'
They declared to assume them dead, no mismatch.

That's why there are timeouts
That's why there are timeouts
that all depends on the recieving carrier settings for the timeout of confirming that the phones off
also apparently depending on which carrier they last checked in with, cause some asian cultures don't really like voicemail, so it just rings indefinitely
