[release]The Navy’s newest ship will be the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus made the announcement at a Pentagon ceremony today, calling Giffords someone whose name is synonymous with courage.
Former Rep. Gabby Giffords looked on at the Pentagon as Mabus made the announcement in a public ceremony. Also in attendance at this afternoon’s brief ceremony in the Pentagon Courtyard was Roxana Green, the mother of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.
Christina-Taylor was among those killed in last year’s deadly shooting rampage in Tucson that targeted Giffords as she met constituents outside a supermarket. Roxana Green will be the ship’s sponsor.
Giffords is still recovering from the gunshot wounds to her head that she suffered during last January’s shooting incident. She stepped down from Congress two weeks ago.
The ship named today for her, which has yet to be built, will be the Navy’s 10th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a new kind of ship designed to bring the Navy fighting power into shallow coastal areas. The first two ships in this class were called Freedom and Independence, but the conventional practice since then has been to name the other ships in the class after a city.
“It’s very appropriate that LCS 10 be named for someone who has become synonymous with courage, who has inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency and showed the possibilities of the human spirit,” said Mabus.
Mabus said the notion occurred to him that this would be a “fitting tribute” not only to Giffords but to Navy families because she was a Navy spouse. Her husband, Mark Kelly, was until recently an astronaut and Navy pilot.
“She called me,” he said, recalling a conversation they had before she was shot. “I’d been in office less than a week telling me that she was a Navy spouse that she wanted to help the Navy any way she could in Congress, but also that she expected me to take good care of the Navy.”
The Navy has named ships after living people with some recent examples being the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush and the submarine USS Jimmy Carter.
Giffords also visited the White House earlier in the day to watch President Obama sign the last piece of legislation she sponsored as a member of Congress.
The Ultralight Aircraft Smuggling Prevention Act of 2012 was passed late last month and gives law enforcement broader authority to counter illicit drug trafficking on U.S. borders.[/release]

Not quite sure what to think about this.
And if you're wondering what it's like:

Watch as it gets severely shot up / damaged, has to be repaired for a year, goes back into service, then is decommissioned from service a short while later.
I wish a ship that cool looking was named after me :(
I know this joke is terribly distasteful, but all I could imagine is some sailor saying, "I served aboard Gabrielle Giffords... If you know what I mean."
Stupid and distasteful
Doesn't anyone even remember the 5 year old girl who was shot? Fuck the old lady, name the ship after her
Oh man lets build another really expensive ship. That's exactly what we need. It's not like our navy isn't already extremely powerful or we are in an economic down-time or anything. Nah, we need MOAR SHIPZ.

"Was this before or after you served aboard Bill Clinton? Don't deny it, we've all done it."

How the hell is this distasteful? they named a Navy Ship after her.
Good name.

The ship was already being built. They don't just suddenly build ships named after people who get shot.
That is a cool looking ship, the back looks somewhat odd, but that's needed for the helicopter and power station I guess.

We bought 10 of them. One is built, one is under construction, Gabby is 5th in line.

If I remember correctly, a very large park in Tucson was named after her.
We also bought 10 Freedom class littoral ships, too. So 20 in total.

General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin are basically rolling in money because of the Navy.
Our navy is so huge already.
It's as if we're preparing to fight the entire world.

Lets totally just stop production of new technology and ships because you know other countries don't upgrade or build new technology so there is no point right.
They got to keep up with the tech, they're not going to let their fleet get old and useless.

Our ships are so powerful no country could stand a chance against us for atleast a decade, which would be ample time to fix our goddamn country before ruining someone elses.

Pretty sure the US has been making dozens of ships every year for quite a while, it's nothing new.

Because, as we all know, resources and labor for government stuff comes outta the air, not from corporations or from by giving people jobs, nope!
Our ships are so powerful no country could stand a chance against us for atleast a decade, which would be ample time to fix our goddamn country before ruining someone elses.
And how do you think the US will continue that trend? Not by sitting on their ass.
Fix our god damn country, call if what you want. But that boat just gives more people jobs. It took a lot of people to build it, develop it, and now sailors to man it. That is a lot of people with jobs.
The military will always be going full steam a head while economic troubles. What the hell do you expect the entire country to stop whats its going? Just because the navy has a new ship built does not mean it is wasted money. Hell the pentagon is where you want to cut funds at. Seeing as you got it figured out, care to explain how the country will be fixed and how not building new technology and ships will help?
Seems like a pretty badass looking ship. I have no problem with them naming it after her.
I miss new submarines and aircraft carriers :(

Ah yes, let's throw money at something we don't need and then wonder why we don't have a functioning (human) space program

Because the "low poly" look makes them stealthier in comparison to the battleship, and weapon systems have significantly increased accuracy/lethal capabilities in contrast to older ships.
Even though I know what it means, the immature part of me giggles at the designation "Littoral Combat Ship".

I don't think there's really much to wonder about. It seems pretty obvious why we don't have one anymore.

Battleships became obsolete after carriers started seeing more use
Even before then their efficiency wasn't that great; it was more to symbolize a nation's power than being a useful warship
