• Understanding the meaning of songs

Ok, probably everyone has sometimes got this thought: 'What the hell is this song actually about? '. I thought I'd start a threat for it to help eachother out a bit and I got a good example to start off with. Snow Patrol - Set The Fire To The Third Bar. I know Snow Patrol often has songs which don't really make any sense at all, but there's just this one word that really bugs me; bar. I mean, it could mean bar as in café or pub, or bar as in a measurebar in musical therms or bar as in a long piece of metal. But none of those definitions actually fit in very well. The rest of the song is basically about missing someone who's quite far away. I find a map and draw a straight line over rivers farms and state lines the distance from here to where you'd be it's only finger-lengths that i see I touch the place where I'd find your face my fingers in creases of distant dark places I hang my coat up in the first bar there is no peace that i've found so far the laughter penetrates my silence as drunken men find flaws in science their words mostly noises ghosts with just voices your words in my memory are like music to me and miles from where you are I, lay down on the cold ground and I, I pray that something picks me up and, sets me down in your warm arms after i have travelled so far we'd set the fire to the third bar we'd share each other like an island until exhausted close our eyelids and dreaming pick up from the last place we left off your soft skin is weeping a joy you can't keep in and miles from where you are I, lay down on the cold ground and I, I pray that something picks me up and, sets me down in your warm arms Don't forget to at least post a link to a video of the song, lyrics will probably be appreciated too.
The simple fact of music is that it is entirely subjective. Music isn't supposed to tell just one thing. We all take different things from it. The artist may have a vision for a song that is entirely lost among their fanbase and an entirely new meaning is found in it.
I know of a song that talks about how addiction ruins you. In the singer's case, its alcohol, but you could also think of it as another type of addiction. Most bands write stuff that's meaningful.
The simple fact of music is that it is entirely subjective. Music isn't supposed to tell just one thing. We all take different things from it. Well you should give Tool a listen, Maynard( the singer ) uses a lot of metaphorical stuff in his lyrics. For example "Stinkfist", if taken literally, is about anal fisting, BUT for real it's only about how we eventually become numb to something and need something more extreme to feel satisfied again.
I don't know guys. There are a lot of songs that are pretty subjective, and then there's others that are pretty straightforward. Take this song for example: (Forgive the video, but the only other upload of this cuts out the first ten or so seconds of the amazing bass intro)
Open the cap fill up the batteries Play the game of your life It's starting to shake It's ready for you to control Your flesh starts to sweat The feeling you need to let go Just do your thing lose all the tension and flow Powertool forever young forever, forever young Powertool when we're in bloom when we're in bloom Feeling the one handed love As the best you've ever had Wiping your mouth and getting Ready to start again When your body is shaking And your sight turns black You will know that you've found me The mighty powertool Powertool forever young forever, forever young Powertool when we're in bloom when we're in bloom
I don't see how this can be that subjective. :colbert:
I've been listening to alot of Robert Johnson lately, and he sings alot about the Devil. Maybe he's singing about white people, or girls?
It is subjective, though sometimes I think songs do have a particular meaning, as Gmod4ever said, they're pretty straight-forward. And I bet I'm not the only one that sometimes doesn't understand what the artist's message actually is, that's why I actually created this, but we could go on in a discussion as well..
Well if we're going to use this thread as a springboard for discussing the meaning of songs, let me start us off: Cynic - Integral Birth
I touch the string though the harp may not sing Still I dig the sky for sun sparks to guide Down below there's a land with an ominous hole Dug deep in the sand of belief A million doves Orbit round the Earth with tears of blood Dare the virgin take integral birth From the void I am born into wave and particle In the uncreated light emerged an oracle A million doves Orbit round the Earth with tears of blood Slay the dragon, take integral birth Weep no more Noble silence usher my way home A million doves Orbit round the Earth with tears of blood Line in sand erased we are but one Cosmic cavalcade we are but one Time has come I take integral birth Reborn
I have no fucking clue what it's about. I feel as though, if I could decipher what exactly is meant by "integral birth," I could figure out the rest.
"Dare the virgin take integral birth" Well it seems like a metaphor to me, but the whole song does.. So I looked the literal meaning up and integral should mean something like whole as in full and birth, well I think you all know what that is.. Obviously a virgin hasn't had sex, so I think it should mean something in the direction of 'Dare someone to do something completely new/ painful.' I thought of painful because of the sentence before this one 'Orbit round the Earth with tears of blood' Just trying.. but I'm kinda curious now what others may come up with.
It's an interesting idea. I was reading around, and someone suggested that it's a story taken out of Revelations, where the virgin refers to Virgin Mary, the integral birth referring to giving birth to Christ, and then apparently a dragon is slain in Revelations? I don't know my Biblical history, unfortunately, so I've no idea how accurate an interpretation that is. :v:

Would make sense indeed to compare to Virgin Mary. Making another jump as we got Christianity involved already, it might also have to do with the baby being born without sin?
While still on the topic of Cynic, I'm now listening to it the first time, and I'm ashamed that I haven't given it a listen before :ohdear:
While still on the topic of Cynic, I'm now listening to it the first time, and I'm ashamed that I haven't given it a listen before :ohdear:
You should be. Cynic is the shit. Traced in Air is an epic with no comparison. A true masterpiece end to end. I'd put it right up there with Dream Theater's Octavarium.
Well I'm just finishing listening the whole Traced In Air album, I have to buy this when I get enough money ( there are probably 10s of albums on that list now :v: )
Well, I think we're pretty concluded on Cynic, so allow me to bring us to the next song I have never been able to get a complete grasp on. Dark Age - Black September
I am the darkest rising A star that kissed the sky Faithfully I consume your features With an injected lies Bury me, and I'll bury you Against the odds, it's all I do Plain whise but you came while calling Imperialistic lies Thunder bleeds our purple skies Carry me to the son who cries Your caring hearts are full of grain Our dying children are insane Will it be today or will it be tomorrow? It is whatever you say... ...because it feels so real to believe that I heal No, I am your black September Unfaithful cries in unfaithful times Father, fake the colours I preach them every day Black blood calls the dollars Down with life and peace I say I can hear them talk to me Fearfull faces all I see No one climbs the golden tree So sorry for what we cannot be. Will it be today or will it be tomorrow? It is whatever you say... ...because it feels so real to believe that I heal No, I am your black September Unfaithful cries in unfaithful times
Some questions to consider (or at least, these are the questions I ask myself when trying to figure this song out):

Who is the "Black September," the one who "consumes your features with an injected lie"?
What is the significance of using the specific color ("Black") and month ("September")? Is this maybe some historic reference?
What does the line "Plain wise, but you came while calling / imperialistic lies" mean?
Why are the children dying? Why are they insane?
What is the significance of the two stanzas after the end of the first chorus? (The end is the "Unfaithful cries..." line)

Who is the "Black September," the one who "consumes your features with an injected lie"?

Probably yes and the singer.. More I couldn't answer really
Nirvana - Polly I just don't get the song....... Lyrics Polly wants a cracker Think I should get off her first I think she wants some water To put out the blow torch Isn't me Haven't seen (have a seed) Let me clip Your dirty wings Let me take a ride Cut yourself (don't hurt yourself) Want some help Please myself I've got some rope You have been told I promise you I have been true Let me take a ride Don't hurt yourself I want some help Help myself Polly wants a cracker Maybe she would like more food She asked me to untie her A chase would be nice for a few Polly says her back hurts And she's just as bored as me She caught me off my guard Amazes me, the will of instinct

Lyrics are in the video, but I'm posting them for reasing pleasure.
All righty then. Picture this if you will. 10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my need-to-know post just outside Area 51 Contemplating the whole chosen people thingy when just then a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this Cutting right angle doughnuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks and me yelping... HOLY FUCKING SHIT Holy fucking shit Fucking shit Holy fucking shit Holy fucking shit Holy fucking shit...fucking shit...fucking shit Then the X-Files being, looking like some kinda blue-green Jackie Chan With Isabella Rossellini lips and breath that reeked of vanilla chig champa Did a slow-mo Matrix decent outta the butt end of the banana vessel and hovered above my bug-eyes, My gaping jaw, And my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip, And all I could think was, I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice That I pissed my fucking pants. So light in his way Like an apparition, He had me crying out, Fuck me! It's gotta be the Deadhead chemistry! The blotter got right on top of me Got me seeing E motherfucking T! And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose, He said you are the chosen one. The one who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it And a warning for those who do not. Me, the chosen one They chose me And I didn't graduate from fucking high school! You had better You had better You had better You had better listen Then he looked right through me With somniferous almond eyes Don't even know what that means Must remember to write it down, This is so real Like the time Dave floated away See my heart is pounding 'Cause this shit never happens to me! Can't breathe right now It was so real Like I woke up in Wonderland Also a bit terrifying I don't wanna be all alone When I tell this story And can anyone tell me why ya'll sound like Peanuts parents Will I ever be coming down? This is so real Finally it's my lucky day See my heart is racing 'Cause this shit never happens to me I can't breathe right now You believe me don't you Please believe what I just said See the dead ain't tourin' And this wasn't all in my head. See they took me by the hand And invited me right in Then they showed me something I don't even know where to begin Strapped down to my bed Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head Am I alive am I dead Can't remember what they said God damn shit the bed High eye (repeated) I believe you (repeated, heard faintly in background) Overwhelmed as one would be Placed in my position Such a heavy burden now to be the one Born to bear and bring to all The details of our ending To write it down for all the world to see. But I forgot my pen Shit the bed again Typical. Strapped down to my bed Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head Am I alive am I dead? Sunkist and sudafed Gyroscopes and infrared Won't help the brain-dead Can't remember what they said God damn shit the bed IIIIIII can't remember what they said to me Can't remember what they said to make me out to be a hero Can't remember what he said Bob help me! Can't remember what he said Don't know, won't know (repeated) God damn shit the bed!

I wasn't asking if the Black September is the person that consumes; I was clarifying that the Black September IS the person who consumes. I was asking who that is supposed to be. :v:
Black September Palestinian terrorist organization. It emerged after the defeat of the Palestinian guerrilla organizations in Jordan in September 1970, from which event it took its name. It was claimed to be an independent organization, but was apparently a cover for al-Fatah operations, the most infamous of which was the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in September 1972. Shortly after that event the organization became inactive. Probably the terrorist organization.
Interesting, but I'm not seeing a correlation between the song and the terrorist organization. Granted that your brief summary is all I know of the organization, but I am not seeing any correlation between the lines, "Thunder bleeds our purple skies/Carry me to the son who cries/Your caring hearts are full of grain/Our dying children are insane," and "No one climbs the golden tree/So sorry for what we can not be;" and the murder of athletes. I can see some similarities within the song, such as "Black blood calls the dollar/Down with life and peace I say," and "I can hear them talk to me/Fearful faces are all I see," but that could just be coincidental, since these are both vague concepts that happens to be shared among terrorist organizations and things such as plague. Also, while we're on the topic, these two lines are really bothering me, because I don't know what they mean at all: "Your caring hearts are full of grain," and "Father, fake the colors/I preach them every day." Any ideas on those two lines? :v: (As you can probably guess, I'm very enthused when it comes to understanding song lyrics; especially the lyrics of bands such as Dark Age, which have a lot of depth to them [look at the lyrics to the song "Minus Exitus," for example.])
She's a weed whore And she'll hit you up for a spliff She'll pretend that she's your friend And fuck you for a whiff She'll never buy a bag She'll never give you dough She'll come to your door lookin' for a lift
"Your caring hearts are full of grain," and "Father, fake the colors/I preach them every day." Any ideas on those two lines? :v:
First one sounds to me like something involving time (the grains of sand in an hourglass) and possibly about how someone's love can just disappear over time The second may have something to do with creed, pretending to be someone you're not, or maybe it ties into the Black September terrorist attack? Just thinking and typing so i dunno v:v:v
Alrighty, well, I know we haven't come to a real conclusion with Black September, but I read the lyrics to this song the other day, and I was completely confounded. Let's see what we can get out of these lyrics: Path of Golconda - Stabbing Love Into Her (Note that I had to upload the video just now, so it's going to take a while before you can listen)
This is the new dimension: A giant fist burst raw to life The ancient wheels were set in motion Stirring mud to magnetise The poundings of a clockwork nova Just in track with genocide Burning white and burning eyes And left me, tempered, mesmerised Oh these prophecies of damnation Never would I dare to seek them in my heart But dusted streets have brought me, an orphan Straight before the doors of carnal arts Counting whores like prey and raptor Truth announced in grave-deep throat Speak! All of it were lies, all the cries I despised Crystallised – How could you leave me? Deep down in the lies I despised To inhale, paralysed? My Hell is coming… All of it were lies, all the cries I despised Crystallised – How could you leave me? Deep down in the lies I despised To inhale, paralysed? Stabbing love into her… It was the black and pinching suit That like poisoned ink tattooed On my skin, in my blood And the soul beneath This mark of falling stars In the afterglow of Mars A battle lost to Venus And the role I thieved A maddening, threatening silence That hushed Amors within me To leave the shore towards war Of worlds and divine order Now this is a new addiction Fixed with tender voodoo chants The world beneath unfolded its Fauna Serpentine and rotten but paradise Despair grew through hopeful mantras Exercised my demons to haunt libertines For one alone, a key, a secret Was torn from me by phantom knives Soon desire forecasts a tragedy Trashed into the faces of all noble dreams By melting plots and midnight speeches A passport to the shadows On my own decree Back and forth, this Slash-o-rama Call it lost, I call it soul All of it were lies, all the cries I despised Crystallised – How could you leave me? Deep down in the lies I despised To inhale, paralysed? My Hell is calling… All of it were lies, all the cries I despised Crystallised – How could you leave me? Deep down in the lies I despised To inhale, paralysed? So hide this night, your crimson smile, inside A secret softly saved from all these vulgar eyes Six feet deeper than their stares could ever seek our Demonlove A venom wind within the whirl we’re in It seemed those hours weren’t ours to begin But never shall I lose the fate to embroidering the stars… … A world of glass … That we grasped … And lost with every lovelorn caress This is not supposed to be death Nor is it my armour of wrath They never gonna get us They never gonna get us They never gonna get us They never gonna get us now… Oh no! Pour your soul into my veins Strength shall now eradicate This world, so dazzled, numb of woe And leave me, drunk on vertigo Storms awake in my again Tear down the prison I hid in I have never fought so strong Against all dread to see But your face cried for the moon, Shall haunt the graves I left too soon In every sea that leads me forth And makes me hoarse and stabbing only Me
As you can probably tell, they enjoy their rhyme-schemes. You should read the lyrics to "Foul Winds Through Utopia." So much internal rhyme it's almost awe-inspiring. :v:
