Iraq has signed contracts to buy Russian arms worth $4.2bn (£2.6bn; 3.2bn euros) this year, Russian news agencies report.
Moscow, the main supplier of arms to Iraq under Saddam Hussein, thus becomes the country's second-biggest arms supplier after the US.
The new contracts were announced after talks between the two countries' prime ministers near Moscow on Tuesday.
Reports suggest attack helicopters and missiles are included in them.
Iraq has been rebuilding its armed forces since the end of US-led combat operations against insurgents.
Thirty Mi-28 attack helicopters and 42 Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile systems are said to be among items being sold.
Further discussions are said to be under way for Iraq eventually to buy MiG-29 jets, heavy armoured vehicles and other weaponry.
The contracts were negotiated during visits to Russia by Iraq's acting Defence Minister, Saadoun al-Dulaimi, in April, July and August.
"The delegation members familiarised themselves with the Russian military production, discussed the technical and commercial options of the offer with Rosoboronexport [state] supplier, and signed contracts worth more than $4.2bn," said a joint statement by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his Iraqi counterpart, Nouri Maliki.
Earlier this week, Mr Maliki explained in a speech that he did not want Iraq to be "part of someone else's [arms export] monopoly."
"We have good relations with the United States and Iran. We do not want to live surrounded by constant conflict. We buy weapons based on the needs that we feel we have," he added.

Neat, I wonder why they chose Russia when they have contracts in the US?
I wonder what they are gonna use it for
hopefully for wiping out the Taliban but that won't happen.

You bolded that part yourself. They didn't pick Russia over US.

That isn't quite what I meant. They already have contracts with the US over this stuff why dident they just buy American. Here, I'll edit my post.

Oh :v:
I think perhaps it's due to the price and also that they've used Russian equipment earlier.

Get a few rifles from the US and get tanks in bulk from Russia. Good deal.
So now instead of AK's from the 70's, they got AK's from the 90's!
Russian vehicles and their engineering is surprisingly great and excels on multifunction at a decent cost, rather than specific purpose and fucking expensive.

Like, I remember reading that some pacific country recently bought a bunch of new MI-8M's over blackhawks because they could mount missile launchers and other weapon systems to them and carry several times more infantry and cargo, at a third of the price.

you can mount missile launchers on a blackhawk... but the Mi-8 is much more versatile cargo wise.

Blackhawks can take similar armament to an apache including its 30mm + mini guns + rockets/ hellfires
or it can not take the 30mm and have all that AND carry troops

he's no ikalugin
You can paratroop out of Mi-8's aswell, can't do that with a blackhawk.
So now instead of AK's from the 70's, they got AK's from the 90's!
Which most likely would be AKs from the 70s anyways. They'd probably sell AK-74s or AK-47s/AKMs off. I don't think Russians sell off AK-74Ms, which are the main service rifle they use. So what you should probably be saying is instead of having AKs from the 40's they now have ones from the 70s.

not true at all.
I've actually seen people parachuting out of blackhawks at air shows.

The Russians are in the process of adopting a new service rifle(I bet its going to be the AK-12), so its still a possibility.. but AK-74M's are more expensive./
Was it not when Iran and Irak went to war, the US supplied Irak and Russia supplied Iran?
Was it not when Iran and Irak went to war, the US supplied Irak and Russia supplied Iran?
Iran uses a mix of American and Russian in most of it's wars... They use American Cobras and fighters.

That wasn't what he was asking.
The soviet union supplied both sides. The US supplied Iraq, and Ironically Israel supplied Iran.

wrong again
In its war effort, Iran was supported by Syria and Libya, and received much of its weaponry from North Korea and China, as well as from covert arms transactions from the United States. Iraq enjoyed much wider support, both among Arab and Western nations: the Soviet Union was its largest supplier of arms.
basically the opposite of what he said.

How am I wrong? Everything I said was true and I answered his question.
And what do you mean by "wrong again" or are you just being an ass.

because you're picking and choosing. Both the US and the SU supported both sides, you didn't state that in your post.
so THAT explains why they fit into the fallout universe, huh.

merge
interesting, i didn't know they had them in the 40's.
AK47 -> 1947 -> 1940s
AK74 -> 1974 -> 1970s
lol you broke my merge too

Still haven't told me how I'm "wrong". And your post is deceptive aswell as it does not state both sides either. So If I'm "wrong" you're just as wrong as I am.

mine is a better overall summary, and yours neglects the large amounts of aid given by china and north korea.
w/e, I don't feel like making a venn diagram and placing aid donors in it, despite that probably being the best way to show this.
interesting, i didn't know they had them in the 40's.
Not in World War II of course, the AK-47 was made after it. In 1947.

Bro, The Iran-Iraq war was somewhat a holy war over different muslim sects and many arab countries funded Iraq just so that the Shi'a's didn't spread out at a more rapid pace.
