Chinese researchers have identified a bacteria which may cause obesity, according to a new paper suggesting diets that alter the presence of microbes in humans could combat the condition. The bacterium—known as enterobacter—had been linked with obesity after being found in high quantities in the gut of a morbidly obese human volunteer, said the report, written by researchers at Shanghai's Jiaotong University. The mice were injected with the bacterium for up to 10 weeks as part of the experiment. The experiments show that the bacterium "may causatively contribute to the development of obesity" in humans, according to the paper published in the peer-reviewed journal of the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISMEJ). A human patient lost over 30 kilograms in nine weeks after being placed on a diet of "whole grains, traditional Chinese medicinal foods and prebiotics", which reduced the bacterium's presence in the patient's gut to "undetectable" levels, the paper said. One of the report's authors, Zhao Liping, lost 20 kilograms in two years after adopting a diet of fermented probiotic foods such as bitter melon to adjust the balance of bacteria in his gut, the American magazine Science said in an article this year on his previous research. Zhao's work on the role of bacteria in obesity is inspired by traditional Chinese beliefs that the gut is the "foundation for human health", Science reported. The scientists wrote in their latest paper that they "hope to identify more such obesity-inducing bacteria from various human populations" in future research. Obesity worldwide has more than doubled since 1980, according to the World Health Organisation, with more than 500 million adults worldwide suffering from the condition according to 2008 statistics. No one is saying people should not eat healthy or not exercise
I find it slightly amusing that it was The Baconator who posted this article I agree with what you are saying though...

I think we can all agree with what you say. Or at least people should. I know people who are eating candy every day. Drinking soda and what not. Not working out at all. And still they r skinny. GIVE ME YOUR GENES!

I link obesity to eating too much goddamn food. I never saw any overweight concentration camp prisoners. I'm not saying you have to starve yourself, but come on. Why do some people insist on making this so much more difficult than it is? It's like one big blame game where the target is everything and everyone except for people stuffing their faces more than they should be.
Skinny =/= Healthy.
I'd rather be skinny and unhealthy than fat and unhealthy.
So do we know if people are born with this bacteria, or get it because of habits, aka where does it come from?
My bet is that the bacterium uses some of the important nutrients, and malnutrition makes the rats feel more hunger, and does not directly cause obesity. It has already been shown that lack of some bacteria that help you digest and use certain nutrients in your stomach makes you feel more hunger (and indirectly causes obesity to some extent).
I think we can all agree with what you say. Or at least people should. I know people who are eating candy every day. Drinking soda and what not. Not working out at all. GIVE ME YOUR GENES!
As a guy who used to weight 55 kilos and ate nothing but fast food and candy; I really did not eat that many calories as my friends and me myself thought. And energy in/energy out is the only thing that matters. You can't fight against thermodynamics. While genes do have an effect on how many calories your body uses, the "idle" consumption relative to a kilogram of certain tissue, for an example a kilogram of lean muscle, does not vary much.
This is probably just a loose link. Given the fact that obese people barely even existed 100 years ago I think obesity definitely can be attributed more to the fact that some of the most affordable and highest quantity food today has a very high sugar/carb content while still providing very little actual substance, so people often find it difficult to control their calorie intake, especially those who are already at risk to gain weight in the first place.
calories in minus calories expended lets you gain lose oraintain. thats all it is except for people with thyroid conditions. also 260 lbs 5'11 and still bulking crew while running a 4.8 40 crew checking in.
well i mean bacteria does digest things so yeah
I'd rather be skinny and unhealthy than fat and unhealthy.
Yeah. Feeling skinny feels better than feeling fat. Fuck, when you're fat you feel heavy and full and u sweat all the fucking time.
And then one month later: ''Prices of anti-bacterial products skyrocket as demand increases by 300%''

It really is as simple as stop eating so much. I'm not saying that there are some people who cant help it because of a disorder or whatever, but the simple fact is if you eat below a certain amount of calories daily and drink a lot of water your body will eventually start using your fat/water stores. I used to weigh 90 kilograms, I know it isnt loads, but I was getting quite chubby and it was because I was stuffing my face with takeaways twice a week and eating truckloads of junk/drinking no water. I lost around 7 kilograms in one week when I started doing just a little exercise, drinking loads of water and completely cutting out snacking.
Yeah. Feeling skinny feels better than feeling fat. Fuck, when you're fat you feel heavy and full and u sweat all the fucking time.
Sex also feels less embarrassing when you lack flab rolls. Edited: Of course, I should know this. :v:
so... fat people are dirty?
Strange... An American bacteria... [sp]I'm actually a scrawny American don't freak out on me[/sp]
I'd rather be skinny and unhealthy than fat and unhealthy.
if you ever get seriously ill you'll probably die
im 180 pounds, I got fat rolls when I sit in my chair. I don't give a FUCK. Whats health? I have no idea. Who gives two shits? If you are fat and unhappy about it then do something fag. If you are fat and happy then theres a good chance your life is pretty good. If you are fat and don't give a shit then join the club. have fun skinny people.
I'd rather be skinny and unhealthy than fat and unhealthy.
skinny and unhealthy is a lot more dangerous than fat and unhealthy
skinny and unhealthy is a lot more dangerous than fat and unhealthy
I wouldn't say more dangerous necessarily but it's probably a lot easier to get in shape from being fat than thin.
I wouldn't say more dangerous necessarily but it's probably a lot easier to get in shape from being fat than thin.
when you're skinny, if you continue to starve yourself, your body will consume muscle mass for energy rather than fat.
Fat people are fat because of poor diet and exercise, nothing else aside from very rare conditions.
when you're skinny, if you continue to starve yourself, your body will consume muscle mass for energy rather than fat.
There's hugely varying degrees of obesity and anorexia, but in the grand scheme of things, since such a large chunk of the modern world is already overweight on average, it would be better to be in the 25th percentile by weight than the 75th, because the 25th would be closer to a healthy weight.
Sounds like poo transplants will be the next big thing.
Fat people are fat because of poor diet and exercise, nothing else aside from very rare conditions.
Fat people are fat from having eaten too much. What you eat doesn't matter, and your level of activity just makes it so you have to eat more to gain fat. [editline]26th December 2012[/editline]
when you're skinny, if you continue to starve yourself, your body will consume muscle mass for energy rather than fat.
yeah and when you're fat it weighs you down; putting undue stress on your joints and internal organs.
So do we know if people are born with this bacteria, or get it because of habits, aka where does it come from?
This article annoyed me slightly because it doesn't specify a specific bacterium, rather the entire genus Enterobacter which includes a lot of species... Generally, they're a normal flora of intestines and you can pick them up from person-to-person contact or the environment (contaminated surfaces and such). Most are opportunistic pathogens though and are only an issue if you're immunocompromised.
