This is the 3D Art Contest. In this contest, you're challenged to design, model, texture and render any type of object designed for holding objects. In other words, a type of storage container. Think chests, crates of any sorts. Be creative! Your submission will be judged on two aspects; design, and execution. The design part en-tales the uniqueness of the object, the overall look and feel, the usability, and if its use is apparent. Execution en-tales things like texture details, optimization and topology. This will be judged by me, and hopefully one or two other judges. Judges can enter the contest, but they enter for laughs, and cannot win. Please let me know if you want to be a judge. HOWEVER, I'd also be willing to make this a winner-by-votes thing, and set up a Poll thread with all the submissions once the contest is over. Please post here if you're going to enter, and if you'd either like two or three judges, or to go with the voting system. If two entries end up with the same amount of votes, and both technically win, the two winners must decide amongst themselves who gets the prize. They can also share the prize. Anyway, here are the guide-lines and rules for entering your submission: -You cannot enter something that you made prior to this contest. -Low-poly. Use few polygons. Use Subdivision modelling to bake normals, and give your object more detail. Your object should be usable in a current-generation game. I won't give a clear polygon limit. -Use only one material for your entire model. Post the texture size as well. -When you post your submission, post a real-time render, and a wireframe with a blank material. Do not post-edit the images in any way, aside cropping. Also post the triangle and polycount, either in the image, or as text. If you used a High-poly object to bake your normals/Ambient Occlusion, post an image of this object as well. Just list it as the high-poly. -The object should be clearly designed for the storage of other objects or materials. Think chests, wardrobes, or perhaps futuristic nuclear material storage devices. Your object should have the interiors accessible in some way, via a lid, or other form of opening. Prizes!: -One Steam game for 20 dollars or less, offered by me. -Mafia 2, digital download on Steam, offered by the generous Mitsuma. Note. The winner may select a prize first. Then the one who came in second, and so on until all prizes are gone. Please let me know if you're willing to donate a prize for the one that comes in second. DEAD-LINE: April 6th. Judges: - SweetSwifter - Domino - (It's be good having one more.) Contestants: - gotchiclampshade - DeanWinchester - dookster - DOG-GY - woolio1 - Kybalt - slayer20 - Juniez - Canary - SCopE5000 - Fingers!!! Contest has CLOSED! Winners will be announced soon!
I think i'm going to enter, i'd prefer a judging system but a voting one might work too. when's the deadline?
Added the Deadline. April 6th. One month should be enough. It's one object after all. And yeah, I personally prefer a judging system as well. I just don't want to be the sole judge. Ideally, I want two fellow judges, so we can use a 2 vs 1 internal vote system.
It's more about low poly modeling and texturing. Not about making a scene. (Like this: http://www.blenderguru.com/new-competition-the-future) I have a STEAM-key for Mafia2. If you want a second prize (or first.)
If you're willing to give up that Mafia 2 key, I'll definitely make it a prize. Also, adding a list of contestants for ease.
I have never, in all my years, had someone spell my username correctly. Today is no exception. Got an idea and concept going already, this is going to be a laugh EDIT Well would you look at that.
gothiclampshade. Bam.
gothic clam shad
Count me in, although one material really makes it hard to make something look nice on render (specially if you want to use glass).
Can't decide if I want to enter or not, I have a lot of real life deadlines at the beginning of April. Can we pull out at any point if life takes over?
Count me in, although one material really makes it hard to make something look nice on render (specially if you want to use glass).
it's meant for realtime. i think this should be limited to a realtime renderer [editline]2nd March 2012[/editline]
Can't decide if I want to enter or not, I have a lot of real life deadlines at the beginning of April.
it's meant for realtime. i think this should be limited to a realtime renderer [editline]2nd March 2012[/editline] no if u pull out u die
Count me in then.

*snipz*
but should we really be able to enter things that we made previously? also ill enter :~)
I'll see what I can do... Probably in Animation form, so as to express my idea more fully.
i have a good idea but absolutely no will to do it. maybe tomorrow. we shall see.
Hmm... Well, I guess I could take this up. I mean, I certainly don't plan on winning but it would make for some good beginner practice.
well then i guess i will enter as well
but should we really be able to enter things that we made previously? also ill enter :~)
Shh it was two weeks ago and is still relevant.

(the tube contains something i dunno)
yeah id say this def counts. its way high poly though, but im assuming you know that.
Watch out Facepunch! I think I'm onto something here. First time using Maya and watching a couple of tutorials on how to move the camera around and add objects. I was able to make that in a couple of minutes.

What the hell... I just basically did that same thing although I did it to learn UVWs rather than to enter this contest. [t]http://i.imgur.com/G9X9G.png[/t]
That most certainly counts, Juniez. Looks great. [editline]3rd March 2012[/editline] Edited the list of contestants. Let me know if I forgot anyone.
Sweet I have an exam in art and I chose containers, count me in.
Im not a fan of the low poly rule tbh, my 3 years experience is designing and modelling for film and animation, which is usually very stylised anyway. I've got pretty much no experience in game modelling or normal maps. Might sit this one out.
Since I have no time to join this contest, I'd like to come in as a judge :)
Think I might have a R.U.S.E key for steam somewhere, If I can find it I'll donate it as a prize.
it's meant for realtime. i think this should be limited to a realtime renderer
Are you telling me I can't have more than one material in a realtime render? :v: And yeah, I can uv it and add an alpha layer for glass but it still has different properties from other materials. Not that I'm going to use glass, I was just making a point.
