• What are coins and subscribing?

i only use facepunch in my phone so the fact that newpunch isn’t done on mobile isn’t great. i can’t find info anywhere? what is the coin system? what is this subscribing system?
Coins are awarded for forum participation, posting, rating, being rated, etc. There's not a lot of explicit information about it to avoid manipulation and spam. Subscribing is how it worked on Oldpunch, you're notified when a forum/thread gets updates and posts. You're also notified when you get rated, referenced, etc.
coins can buy you forum functions, you get them for being active, posting, rating, browsing, it is not disclosed what exactly subscribing system gives you notifications when your favorite thread/subforum gets action
Thank you both guess we all just got to get use to this
Leveling is done the same way coins are awarded, through unexplained forum participation. It's related to coins pretty directly but there's currently no point to level, being approximately what gold member was on Oldpunch but instead of "blue" and "gold", it's a more analogue scale based on your forum activity since post count is only visible on profiles now.
Is there a 'Read Threads' section? That was primarily how I kept track of things - a subscription system is going to be pretty bad when some threads go through changes really fast, and I'm not interested in getting emailed every time someone posts in LMAO pics.
The Help page has you covered: Levels What are levels? Your level shows next to your name. It's an indication to other posters or your seniority on the forums. How do I level up? You gain level by reading and posting on the forums. To avoid the temptation to spam to level up, there's a very low daily cap. Why not just postcount and date? Join date isn't an indication of seniority on the forums, neither is postcount. The most valuable members to a forum visit and post every day. Level aims to be an indicator of that. Won't people be active just to level up? Yes, that's exactly what we're trying to encourage.
You can disable email notifications, though yes, your personal event log will be updated for every post. I wouldn't recommend subscribing to LMAO pics since it's such a frequently updated thread and the posts are shit so you really only need to pop in randomly occasionally. Subscribing is best for less active, more meaningful post, threads like WAWYO.
So, no more Read Threads function, huh? That sucks. Hope it gets re-added at some point. It was also how I kept track of recent posts and new threads, in addition to the ones I wanted to follow that didn't get posted in too often. Subscriptions are strictly inferior imo, but I guess I'll see.
In what way are they inferior?
Just to me - I preferred the layout of the Read Threads page. Had everything all in one convenient spot and I didn't need to either check the subforum the thread was in, or my email. Ideal, as far as I was concerned.
But you can subscribe to a thread and it will show you when it gets new posts, its the exact same minus manually subscribing.
Minus the new posts, minus the new threads, plus the tiniest amount more effort! The first two are the things I'm concerned about - manually subscribing isn't a big deal, but the loss of all that in one convenient spot is.
will my tens of thousands of posts give me untold numbers of coins once theyre all fully migrated or will the daily cap prevent me getting over a days worth of coins for all 66k
If I vote someone a coin rating will that take a coin from me?
Here are your new posts: https://i.imgur.com/jzM27kS.png And here are your new threads in a forum: https://i.imgur.com/GyB3UTh.png What are you missing?
Both the coin and gem are an actual "economic" rating, insofar as it actually gives the rated person a coin or ten coins respectively.
holy shit it's true lol
So I'm respect to the come, the way the avatar size is setup I'm lead to believe that you could have a huge avatar if enough coins are invested. I assume there is some avatar size cap with coms, correct?
I'm pretty sure migrated posts do, because I have gotten coins from migration, but didn't have any before.
You pay for avatar enlargement. It can go up to 150x300 iirc. You get coin for every (hundred) post in your name. I'm not entirely sure if you will be further reimbursed as more posts complete their migration.
Where do gems come from
So i need to post 32100 times to unlock the largest avatar?
I think he means the diamond rating thing. The only way to get those is if someone rates you a diamond.
I like the idea of coins and diamond ratings having weight, but I don't like how it's in the mix with the rest of the ratings cause if I hadn't read this thread I wouldn't have known.
Won't this create some incentive for certain "people" to whore themselves out for ratings? I remember something vague about an old smart-dumb system being removed because of it on old oldpunch
Will probably be less prevalent since coins/diamonds actually cost people one of their own to give. People are gonna be less likely to just give them out for someone being a doofus.
Diamonds seem to just be 10 coins. Basically a more powerful coin.
Read threads was useful because it gave you a quick way to check if there were a lot of updates on something you'd looked at earlier. Obviously it would always contain a couple of spam threads like LMAO pics (unless you never looked in those threads), but it still gave you a quick way to see that a random news or video thread had blown up and was worth checking out again without having to manually go to a specific subforum. It also gave you a quick way to check for new posts in anything you'd recently looked at. The way I see it, subscriptions are best for long term threads that aren't tremendously active. Read threads gave you a short term rolling overview of content you might be interested in, which is something that subscriptions don't really accomplish.
So I did the math, to reach previous gold member avatar dimensions (80x160), you need... 9,472 coins. I guess I won't be able to use my old avatar anytime soon.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
