just to ruin your thanksgiving
Fox Business kicked off Thanksgiving eve with a joke about food stamps. Discussing Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker’s challenge to live on food stamps for one week, Fox pundit Andrea Tantaros said that living on a $133 monthly allowance for food would make her look “fabulous.” Meanwhile, a record number of Americans actually rely on this budget, for less than $1.50 per meal.
Far from a diet, not having enough food to eat is a harsh reality for 50 million people. The average Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) household has a monthly income of $731, and 76 percent include a child, elderly or disabled person. Without SNAP, even more Americans would go hungry.
Healthy foods costs more money, not less, poor people eat less healthily
This shouldn't be expected from Fox. Without food stamps A LOT of people would be left starving. I hate rich people like this.
Well that's not very nice.
What's really funny is that according to a study I can't remember for the life of me, the ~$6bn that were spent on the election is roughly 66% of what it would take to feed everybody.

Someone is not gonna spend $6bn to do that though, but they would to get into office where they then could try to help people. That $6bn was also accumulated from donations and from the candidates. There is charities you can donate too that help people in need but I do not think that Americans think that so many people are hungry and going without meals everyday.
A bunch of rich people trivializing poor people's starvation.
wow.
wow
I feel insulted considering a few years back we weren't doing too good at all when my father walked out. Without food stamps and help our holiday would have been nothing.
Dammit Fox
They were basically making fun of how little they are given, not the fact that they get food stamps at all. That's not really bad, in fact seems to suggest they should be given more help.
We pay around $100 to about 200 sometimes on groceries and it gets us through a week or month
Maybe these wealthy shits should do a 40 hour famine or be set a challenge to live on $133 for food on a month and see how they go

But they trivialized it and laughed it off is the point.
My family's never been on foodstamps since I was born, but my mom and dad were when my older sisters were kids, and even now we have months where we have to subsist on $0.80 to $1.00 frozen meals and rice to get by without becoming indebted. It's not fun, and it's no one's fault. My dad is a blue-collar worker (machinist) and I've had people say that if my dad had aimed higher we wouldn't have this problem. Fuck them is what I say, we need blue-collar workers, and cashiers, and all those low-paying jobs for society to function. How in the hell is it a laughing matter to not be able to afford basic goods for a simple holiday?
If it was any other mainstream media outlet I'd say that, given the phrasing it might be a harmless joke borne out of ignorance, not really noteworthy.
But as the mouthpiece for the GOP and notoriously known for their disparaging comments against the poor and working class, it's too easy to see malice when a bunch of people on Fox news crack jokes about food stamps.

What? It only affects poor peop- ooh, that was close, I almost referred to them as people!
My cousin works at a local grocery store, and today she talked about all the crazy shit people will do with EBT cards and food stamps. She gets a lot of customers who walk in and charge a $.50 pack of gum to their EBT card, then withdraw hundreds of dollars from the cards so they could use the cash without being audited. A lot of the people who do this are well-dressed, carrying around Coach pocketbooks and manicured nails, etc. Just thought I'd share what I learned about government assistance programs on Thanksgiving, since apperently I'm supposed to care about an off-hand remark a Fox News anchor made about them on Thanksgiving.

I don't really see why this one sentence the Fox anchor said warrants an entire news article.
The fact is, We as a whole (Community wise) Are telling the government to do more to prevent this from happening. Certain public support programs literally have no requirements to get public assistance.
Everyone who actually values and needs it has no problems further proving they need it. The fact is Certain public assistance programs will decide based on your race or ethnicity depending on the area you live. Certain public assistance programs will only require you prove you applied to one or two jobs a month. They won't even follow up to make sure the applications were really followed through or if you just scribbled shit on a random application you printed out.
I should go on a food stamp diet...
[sp]Joking, why do people have to do that? Public TV, people always should be respectful, in private it's OK but Jesus people, have integrity.[/sp]

One of the major arguments against finacial aid to the needy, as opposed to stuff like food stamps and item aid.

Food stamps would probably taste terrible
Fucking bitch.
It's so refreshing to know that these people are probably being paid $60k or more a year to act like complete assholes on TV, while here I am, unemployed for 3 weeks, applied to at last 40 jobs and have heard nothing back except from jobs that would actually pay less (after taxes) than my combined unemployment and EBT (food stamps).
Such a wonderful fucking country I live in.
one thing a lot of people don't know about food stamps is that it's not meant to pay for all your food ever, it's meant to be a supplement to your income. you're supposed to pay for some of the food on your own. it isn't hard for someone with even the lowest paying job to allocate an extra $50 for food (they would be paying 4 times that if they weren't getting food stamps).
My best friend had to use food stamps this thanksgiving because his father just died and they lost all their income, and prior to that happening, they were in no need of any help from the government.
Fuck you Fox.... fuck you...
i think people have lost their heads in france over less than this
why is the minimum wage so low in the US, up here its $10 yet in the US its $7
why is the minimum wage so low in the US, up here its $10 yet in the US its $7
Cause anytime it's even mumbled corporations threaten thousands of jobs. Most companies doing extremely well encourage it. Infact my company i work for pays no less then 8.50 an hour. Giant corporations live off 7.25 for most of there low tier employees who never see raises. They penny pinch so much for profit (Which they don't even need too) that the second a penny is threatened they hold up thousands of employees with knifes at there neck if the government tries anything.
By now the minimum wage should be 8 bucks flat or up to 8.50. That small buck difference can make or break paychecks
why is the minimum wage so low in the US, up here its $10 yet in the US its $7
It's regulated on the state level also, my sate is at $9.04

2 words: Corporate Greed.
And here I thought I couldn't think even LESS of Fox. Goddamn poor-abhoring fascists.
This shouldn't be expected from Fox. Without food stamps A LOT of people would be left starving. I hate rich people like this.
even with food stamps, it's not enough, they give us 300 dollars a month in food stamps to feed a family of 3 grown men (I include myself in this category mostly because I am bigger than most grown men I know, hell, I'm bigger than my dad) and one mother. We could not live off foodstamps if it were to come down to that, that's 10 dollars a day for 4 people to eat. My dad has had to take an under-the-table job (no tax) to deal with this financial trouble, and it's still barely enough to keep the fridge not empty. We've had to eat out just about every other day, and it's taking it's toll on my health. If I didn't have sports to help to keep me fit, I would most likely be more unhealthy than I already am.
Our thanksgiving consisted of a turkey and some pumpkin pie given to us by one of my dad's friends. That was a damn good turkey though, I have no idea why but probably the best turkey I've had in my life haha.
