The teens whose bodies were found in Lakeland's Humphries Park Tuesday evening died of apparent gunshot wounds, the Washington County Sheriff's office announced today.
They were identified as Lisa Marie Grijalva, 15, and Jacob Zachary Campbell, 14, students at Oak-Land Junior High in Lake Elmo.
Deputies recovered a long-barreled weapon near one of the bodies, the sheriff's office said.
"The scene was contained and there is not a public safety concern to the area," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The park was serene this morning, the entrance marked by a single bouquet of flowers. But a steep trail through a heavily wooded area led to a gruesome site where the bodies were found. Two pools of blood remained at the scene.
Someone called 911 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after finding the teens' bodies, then led sheriff's deputies and members of the Lower St. Croix Valley Fire Department up the path to the bodies.
Some neighbors today said they had not heard any gunshots.
Oak-Land Principal Derek Berg released a statement this morning extending "deepest sympathies to the families of these students and to the students and staff who knew them."
"We informed students of the deaths today and allowed them to meet with counselors if they wished, and to have time to talk, express their feelings, and support each other," Berg wrote. He said students were being encouraged to talk about how they learned about the deaths and their memories of their

classmates.
Carissa Keister, a spokeswoman for Stillwater Area Public Schools, issued a statement early today saying that the district's crisis team had been gathered and that counselors and school psychologists, as well as community counselors, would be available to help students and staff. A woman who knew the deceased boy and lives nearby said Tuesday night that he lived very close to the spot where the two were found. The park borders a residential area north of the intersection of Second

The boys in the neighborhood - including the deceased - were very close-knit, all playing baseball and attending Boy Scouts together, the woman said. She said the boy who died had lived in the neighborhood for some time. Some of the boy's friends said they had received at least one text message from him earlier Tuesday.
Washington County Sheriff Bill Hutton said Tuesday that in his 27 years of law enforcement experience, "This is a very rare very tragic occurrence." "Our hearts go out to their friends and family," Lakeland Mayor Brian Zeller said today. "It's a tragic event."
Lakeland, a community of 1,900, lies on the western bank of the St. Croix River along either side of Interstate 94.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to help investigate. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner also is assisting.
Damn, that sucks.
Murder-suicide or double-suicide.
:smith:
I bet it was a peer of theirs because who else would be fucking stupid enough to leave the weapon RIGHT BESIDE the bodies
Murder-suicide? Unless the perpetrator decided to leave the gun at the scene, which really doesn't make sense at all, but it's still possible.
yeah or that

After reading
"The scene was contained and there is not a public safety concern to the area," the sheriff's office said in a statement
I think it's a murder-suicide.

Actually maybe a double-suicide.
Some area residents said two students from the school were said to have discussed a suicide pact recently and deleted their Facebook pages Tuesday, the Star Tribune said.
Stuff like this sorta scares me to even step outside the front door.
Why am I reminded of that one 19 year old girl who was raped/murdered last summer.
I wish someone was there to help them get through whatever caused the suicide. Stuff like this makes me think people should've been more friendly to them, but it says they were very close-knit with the community, I don't really see why they would do this. I am sure they were very lovable people.
:ohdear:
Washington County examiner has deemed it a Murder Suicide.
