New York train crash: Metro-North derailment in Bronx
A passenger train has derailed in the Bronx area of New York City, prompting a major emergency services response amid reports of multiple injuries. Earlier reports from the scene said carriages had gone into a nearby body of water, but the MTA has denied this.
The Fire Department of New York says the derailment occurred at 07:20, and that 130 firefighters were on the scene. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said the derailment had occurred near Spuyten Duyvil station.
This has just been reported, so updates probably will happen.
Update: "reports of at least four deaths."
Come on world, get your shit together.
(Fair deal of fairly depressing events happening fairly recently)

What does this have to do with the world? It might not even be anybody's fault

While it's nowhere near the tightest curve in the system it would not be difficult to jump the tracks if you build up enough speed. Hopefully this does not torpedo the upcoming regulation change regarding minimum weights especially because the extra weight could have made it easier for the train to derail in the first place.
It is reported by CNN that the train operator applied brakes, but nothing happened.

That has to be the worst inoffensive post I've ever seen.
It is reported by CNN that the train operator applied brakes, but nothing happened.
If wiki is to be believed I wonder if it has anything to do with the ongoing rebuild of the P32AC-DMs, the locomotive involved in the crash.
I also wonder if the crash could have been prevented by federally mandated PTC that is completely unfunded meaning both Freight Companies and cash strapped Public Transit Agencies are waiting till the last minute when the mandate comes online December 15, 2015.
[editline]1st December 2013[/editline]
Amtrak Empire Service being held back at NYC/Albany infinitely and the NTSB will be holding a press conference at 10:45 ET.
The locomotive appears to have been in push mode at the time of the crash. There is a lot of speculation regarding whether or not that has anything to do with the crash. Braking and other train dynamics are a bit shakier in push mode. As for PTC, Metro-North (being a commuter route) has an ATC system, and if they were overspeed, this will raise serious questions as to how and why this system failed.
Neat right by where I live
Sounds like a mechanical failure.
AmTrak's fleet of locomotives is aging, and our rail infrastructure in general could use. . . hell, what could be as close to a complete overhaul as possible. It's not the greatest situation.
for the past couple of years the nyc subway and train system has been operating at nearly half speed because they just haven't been putting in the money to fucking maintain the rails and keep them safe. maybe this will finally push it over the edge and get them in proper working condition again.
Jesus look how close to the water it got. This could have been so much worse.
My ex-girlfriend was almost on that train, then she decided to take the bus. Jesus Christ.
