Twenty-six men working at a university in Wales are suing their employers for more than £700,000 over allegations of sex discrimination and unequal pay. The men, caretakers and tradesman employed by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, say they have been paid less than female employees in equivalent posts for seven years. They each argue they have been underpaid by an average of £4,000 a year since 1 August 2007 and are claiming more than £30,000 each in back payments. In total the 26 men are demanding around £736,000 from the university, as well as future wage increases to put them in line with female colleagues on the same pay grade. On Tuesday next week an employment tribunal hearing in Cardiff will hear claims from 19 of the men. Depending on the outcome, the other seven may then have their own hearings. All were originally employed by Swansea Metropolitan University, which merged with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in August last year. Remember kids: men can also be treated as lesser equals. We should try harder to actually create equality across all jobs. We're moving into an age where women are moving into jobs that have culturally and historical been mens job (soldiers, doctors etc.) and men are getting jobs that have culturally and historically been womens job (nurses is honestly the only good example I can come up with at the moment).

Secretarial stuff?
Child care? Secretarial stuff?
Having 4 kids, and jobless, i went to a child care to seek a job, they being "Friends" told me blatantly that they will not hire a Male, because when a parent says "They touched my kid", a female's case will most likely be thrown out, where as a male will have to go thru it all. Its funny because she than said "If i were to hire a male, i would have to hire a female, to watch that male."

how does this kinda crap even happen? like, surely a certain position should have a fixed pay grade. i don't understand how and why gender ever has to be a factor re: pay
People get paid based on a variety of other factors, including specific knowledge and experience, as well as time spent working for the institution.
i think when it comes to doing the same job you should be getting the same pay. although yeah time working there is a good factor to use

Women were awarded jobs since the Industrial Age and particularly WWII but until very recently had been employed in very specific "womanly" positions. We cant discredit cases like this where men are paid less for said "feminine" jobs but the fact stands that the paygap is still much larger in the mens favor. I'm glad that Obama is making some steps towards equal pay in equal fields in this sense. However, if, for example, in a frycook position I can make 10 burgers every 5 minutes and you can only make 5, does that make my work more valuable than yours? In that lies the issue with true equal pay, because being naturally gifted at a position does not necessarily mean you're working harder than the other person, and some may argue that you deserve the same pay because of it. In the end it's very difficult to discern and why Socialism and Capitalism are both very controversial. I'm totally off on a tangent though, long story short entry level pay should be equal.
