Adblock Plus now sells ads -> Start using uBlock Origin

Adblock Plus is launching a new service that... uh, puts more ads on your screen.
Rather than stripping all ads from the internet forever, Adblock Plus is hoping to replace the bad ads — anything it deems too big, too ugly, or too intrusive — with good ads, ones that are smaller, subtler, and theoretically much less annoying.
It’ll begin doing that through an ad marketplace, which will allow blogs and other website operators to pick out so-called “acceptable” ads and place them on their pages. If a visitor using Adblock Plus comes to the page, they’ll be shown those “acceptable ads,” instead of whatever ads the site would normally run.
“It allows you to treat the two different ecosystems completely differently and monetize each one,” says Ben Williams, Adblock Plus’ operations and communications director. “And crucially, monetize the ad blockers on on their own terms.”
I only really run an adblocker because of pop ups and shit, which still appear even on websites that beg me to turn it off because they "only serve good ads!!!"
Which is to say the idea of replacing shit ads with non-shit ads is fine with me. If it fucks up I'll find a different adblocker.
Good thing I switched to ublock origin ages ago then
As long as those replaced ads are truly less annoying and checked for harmfulness I have no problem with this.

Thanks, switched over in less than 30 seconds
Seems like a really good way to make yourself obsolete.

I switched because it ran better, this is just an added bonus
For the few people out there still vehemently opposing transitioning from ABP to UBO... now would be the time.
You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Went ahead and switched to UBO just because it looks more efficient than ABP. ABP was starting to miss some very annoying ads so we'll see if UBO does better.
This sounds really cool. Being able to easily choose exactly what advertisements appear on your own website is a great thing, unless you're so selfish that the pure notion of paid content is akin to being told that piracy is a crime.
I block ads for fear of virus events due to the unsupervised nature of advertisements, of course on-top of the obtrusive nature many demonstrate. With this system it sounds like each advertisement is screened for approval, and you can directly blame a website operator for anything inappropriate.

Just add couple 3rd-party filters and you are golden.
meh, this isnt really evil and they likely have options for it just like their whitelist. UBO is better but if you want to feel less bad about blocking ads you can just use ABP with a whitelist or this or whatever, good to have the choice.

Don't forget anti-adblock killer.
I hope their whitelist is thoroughly checked to make sure there's nothing malicious on it.
I can't see ads as anything but windows to viruses. I turned off adblock on two websites I wanted to support and a week later I had malware. Fucking ridiculous, haven't turned it off anywhere since.

I also don't use Steam's in-game browser for anything but Facepunch and direct image links because the same thing happened there. Went on a few websites and got malware.
Do I get uBlock like AdBlock?
Ublock Origin also works great on Firefox Mobile (if you have an Android phone with ≥2GB RAM), by the way.
I just got ublock, so when i click the icon, the little 4 things like block popups, which selection means its blocked? The two pages one or the two pages with an x through it one?
Do I get uBlock like AdBlock?
Yeah, it's just an addon on firefox or chrome browsers.
I've used ublock origin for a long time and it's great.
btw people, make sure you get ublock origin and not ublock. They're different. ublock origin gets more work IIRC and is drama free unlike the old ublock.
umatrix is also nice to have if you want something more, but you should know how webpages and frames work to use it.
I don't like ads, but i wonder what would websites do without a source of income. They would have to make money from selling our info, or by putting their sites behind paywalls
Publishers will get to keep 80 percent of all ad revenue from marketplace ads, with the remaining 20 percent being divided between various other parties involved with serving the ads. Adblock Plus will receive 6 percent of total revenue.
I don't fully understand, does the website owner receive ad revenue? because for me thats my only issue with using adblock is not providing ad revenue for content creators.
So what are the best alternatives to Adblock Plus?

Or maybe they can take the time to curate ads and make sure none of them come from some shady looking place, make sure the ads aren't obtrusive, dont open up new tabs or windows, play sounds, make sure ads on videos are skippable, and dont appear on what you're reading once you've scrolled down 5 times.
Most of us don't want to be advertised to in the first place.
I get bombarded with thousands of "BUY THIS SHIT" messages a day.. I want to be able to work/play on the internet without any sort of advertising, simply because the entire advertising system has completely oversaturated other forms of entertainment.
When a lot of website revenue comes from ads, you want to have your cake and eat it too. I don't think that's fair at all to the website owner. Typically in these discussions people say 'I want to support the websites and would if only ads weren't so annoying/intrusive/risky', but now that Adblock is trying to lead that change the excuse is invalid. If they deliver on their promises, then the only remaining justification will be 'I want my website content without seeing the ads that finance it', and that's weak.
Literally fuck off
I use ad blocker because I don't give a single flying vibrating crock of shit about ad revenue and whoever gets it, if I don't want ads I install an ad blocker to not see any ads

"i want everything to be free"
would you prefer to pay to get into all your favorite websites, or for them to shut down for lack of funds?
Can you whitelist with ublock? How about specific youtube channels?
I feel like the only one who installed AdBlock for a cleaner browsing experience, with everyone talking about viruses etc.
I just grew tired of the many boobies and "free games" tricking me :frown:

this is the thing i've wanted most
