• Is it worth getting a gamepad?

I've been gathering money to buy something for my PC (I'm poor, so it takes long time). Once I saw Logitech Chillstream gamepad, and, as I heard, it's very good. I've read many recommendations like good precision, quality and active cooling. But I don't really know if should I buy a gamepad, because I used to play with keyboard and mouse; I've also heard that for some games its much better than keyboard [and mouse]. And I'm wondering if should I buy it for higher comfort in racing/console ported games or keep gathering money for more RAM (I've got 2GB now), because I've changed my main OS to Windows 7 recently.
I use this for playing braid as it feels more natural than using a keyboard But for regular gaming (First person shooters etc) nothing beats a mouse and keyboard
Can you use that on the Xbox as well or something? Looks pretty nice, don't know if you will get any advantages in FPS's though. Tell us your RAM amount.
2GB, sometimes I really feel this is a small amount. I also edited OP with that information.
Depends on the games you're going to play. If you're going to play FPS games then don't buy it.
What about Mass Effect 1 & 2? I've been playing these games a lot recently.
I use a 360 USB controller whenever I'm too tired for keyboard&mouse :v:
But once again, is it more comfortable than k&m?
I got a gamepad like 5 years ago, I havn't touched it since. But then again I had forgot about it untill now and it sucks ass.
I use a PS2 controller adapter I like it, but it's not good enough. The only not-100%-obvious requirement you should have is that you need analog R/L triggers. for racing games, you need to be able to press lightly on the gas sometimes, which is impossible with my PS2 controller the chillstream actually looks very good. 360 or PS3 controllers on PC are cool too
The Chillstream is awesome, I have it, even though the fan seem to be f'd up a bit. I used it in GRiD, Lost Planet and some other ports from the X360 where it came out to be great. In GRiD especially, since the game controls the best with a gamepad.
I like playing GRID, but it's not enough. I would like to hear [read] some more advices.
I personally have a Chillstream, and I love playing games using it. The Just Cause 2 demo is so much better with a gamepad than it is with a joystick. There's no accuracy with a gamepad, it's all spray and pray, so don't bet on using it for CS:S tournaments Oh and a note; the chillstream isn't compatible with a xbox 360 oddly enough. Edit:
I like playing GRID, but it's not enough. I would like to hear [read] some more advices.
Just Cause 2 Grand Theft Auto series Half-Life series Colin McRae series Left4Dead series Mirror's Edge Saints Row 2 Basically any game that requires driving or shooting at random.
Sounds cool.
So, any more reasons to buy the additional memory or gamepad?
Get a 360 controller for windows, since it's natively supported by a lot of new games. You won't use it for anything but driving and arcade flight sims, but for what it does it's very good.
Goto your local thrift store and get the first USB gamepad you see. I've got 2 very nice gamepads at my local goodwill. [editline]09:48AM[/editline] For $2.

Get a standard USB Xbox controller. They're compatible with a lot of games and are decently comfortable. I use a controller for some 3rd person shooters like GTA and racing games.
Get a standard USB Xbox controller. They're compatible with a lot of games and are decently comfortable.
Their price is comparable to Chillstream's, but aren't they worse than it?

Gamepads are for racing. I had to buy one for Race Driver: GRID. Just buy a cheapy Logitech Dual Action or RumblePad 2 gamepad. Works fine for me. You should get a 360 controller. I have a Logitech Duel Shock and while it's great most games just work a lot better with a 360 controller and sometimes it's even the only thing they support at all. [editline]06:53PM[/editline] Although people in this thread say it works just as well
I have a 360 controller I use sometimes. I almost never use it. Only for helicopters in gta4 and I have used it in the just cause 2 demo as well.
PS3 controller is the best for PC gaming, but it's a pain in the ass to get working.
I'll put in my vote for the wired 360 controller, I don't use it a lot but for certain games it's great. I like the feel of it better than any other gamepad I've tried.
But why should I get a 360 controller instead of Chillstream or more RAM?
I use a Logitech Dual Action because I've always preferred the Playstation style controllers. I play a lot of casual Trackmania each weekend and it's nice and simple for that.
Grand Theft Auto series Left4Dead series Mirror's Edge
no Every FPS game ever made is better on Mouse and Keyboard. Every one. [editline]03:37PM[/editline]
But why should I get a 360 controller instead of Chillstream or more RAM?
A whole lot of new games natively support the 360 controller, and work very well with it. For example, in GTAIV, the button prompts change instantly from the keyboard buttons to the xbox buttons, rather than changing to generic 'JOY1, JOY2, JOYX+' prompts. It's genuinely a pleasure to use.
