A mother is said to have given her 13-year-old daughter three ecstasy tablets as a birthday present, the BBC learned.
Middlesbrough mayor Ray Mallon highlighted the case when speaking to Look North about hundreds of troubled families being supported on Teesside.
The investigation also found Middlesbrough Council was spending £600,000 per year on a family with six children in care.
Children should be targeted "in the womb" to stop problems, Mr Mallon said.

"Bloody Chavs"
meanwhile my parents didn't even let me have cubes of sugar >:c
"no mom that's not what I meant when I said I want to be ecstatic"
Happy birthday! We also got you a copy of Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow.
This is what I mean when I say benefits and tax credits should be means tested.
I can totally understand the mother wants her child to try drugs under her supervision, but 13 and ecstasy is a bit too young. Ecstasy is know to be cut up with other drugs such as meth or speed or caffeine. Sometimes ecstasy pills don't even contain MDMA at all and are made up out of even more dangerous chemicals/drugs.
I'm just curious now, what's the British equivalent of the United State's Florida? Or Inglewood/Compton/South Central LA or Detroit?
Is Middlesbrough one of them?
Should have given her something less harmful. However, that's a pretty kickass birthday present.

Yeah it's a pretty rough area to live. Has many social issues as highlighted in the article. It has lots of heavy industry as well so not exactly the healthiest place to live either.
I think it was voted one of the worst places to live on some TV programme a couple of years back.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say this right now.
You're statistically more likely to be harmed horse riding than you are from taking E.
In a landmark 1985 study, Dr. J.L. Firth estimated that while "a serious incident can be expected at the rate of 1 per 7,000 hours of motorcycle riding, serious injury rates exceeding one per 350 horse riding hours have been described, making horseback riding 20 times more dangerous than motorcycling. Effectively, horseback riding, motorcycling, and automobile racing are the three most dangerous sports." As far as injuries go, horseback riding leads to more spills on average than motorcycling.
David Nutt, a former chairman of the UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, stated in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in January 2009 that ecstasy use compared favorably with horse riding in terms of risk, with ecstasy leading to around 30 deaths a year in the UK compared to about 10 from horse riding, and "acute harm to person" occurring in approximately 1 in 10,000 episodes of ecstasy use compared to about 1 in 350 episodes of horse riding.[87]
Don't get me wrong a 13 year old shouldn't be getting E, but it's not even close to being as bad as most people believe it is.
If it was pure and unadulterated then yeah way better than giving her a bottle of vodka or some shit but I think the main issue was she just gave her the pills without really knowing exactly what they were made up of. As an advocate of proper drug legalisation and regulation I'd still consider that pretty irresponsible.

You never know whats in a drug, especially one like ecstasy. Plus ecstasy is also related to a plethora of issues within the brain.
Drug fucks you up man, especially if your 13.

What does psychedelic rock have to with ecstasy?

Unless it's a shitty E wannabe mixture made for maximizing profits, or you already have some sort of mental illness.

If you're talking about 'bad areas' then Hackney E5 and E8, Stonebridge N10 and Brixton would be some good examples.
Luton, Newcastle, Glasgow, they all have bad areas in them, too.
What dumbshit gives a 13 year old drugs
Middlesbrough
Not even surprised.

Everywhere has shit areas dude, everywhere.
Wish I got some decent E or MDMA for my birthday
Everywhere has shit areas dude, everywhere.
He wanted specific answers, I didn't want to be a dick by saying 'everywhere'.
Also that depends how general you are. A little village in the Green Belt doesn't have a 'shit area'.

This is a fucking stupid comparison.
Oh, I'm more likely to be hurt by a half-ton creature that can instantly kill me with a single kick than I am with a drug that can only cause damage through repeated use or high doses? Who would've fucking guessed.
Damn hippies
You are my Boro. My only Boro! You make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never notice how much I love you, YOU'LL NEVER TAKE MY ECSTACY AWAY!

i wouldnt want my kids doing anything more than having a drink or puffing a joint occasionally (hopefully once they're older and more educated), but giving E to a 13 year old is pretty irresponsible, as a birthday present too @_@

just because YOU don't want them to do anything more than alcohol (which is more harmfull than MDMA) and cannabis doesn't mean they will. You just don't have 100% control over your child.
So, would you rather have your child try a drug under your supervision or do you want to get called at 2AM by your child's drug buddies to pick up your child because he/she is having a bad trip? I'd rather be a responsible parent and supervise my child.

If I don't want my child doing something, I'm not going to allow them to do it. If I let them do anything they want to, even under my supervision, I might as well be doing nothing at all.
Pop'd the molly I'm sweatin. WOO!

Well there's your problem.
What, she didn't put on PINK FLOYD: THE WALL?
Fucking child abuse.
