• Desktop turns on and off trying to boot up

Hey guys, I recently bought and assembled a new desktop computer. I put it all together and everything was working, I installed windows 7 and everything was fine. I left my room and came back a few hours later and the computer had turned off, now, when i try to start it up, it turns on for a moment, then turns off, then tries to turn on again, then goes dark again. This continues until i turn off the power switch on the back. The green light on my motherboard is on, and now and then i hear a beep (the hardware check beep) before it goes dark again. I tried rearranging my ram which is currently in the 1st and 3rd slots on the motherboard, and many other combinations, but still to no avail. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I have checked the motherboard user manual and the ram i have is compatible. tl;dr: computer tries to boot up, but only is running for a moment before turning off. Cycle repeats until the power switch is turned off. I want to get this thing working!!! :(
Does your card need separate power cables? Make sure they're plugged in, also sounds like the PSU is faulty or a power cable isn't plugged in, otherwise it would just fail POST, not turn off.
The card is plugged in directly to the power supply. I'll start checking to see if there are any loose cables, otherwise i'll try another PSU. Though, is it common for a PSU to be faulty out of the box like this?
It's not exactly "common", but it's known to happen, it can happen to any component, there may be faulty soldering, bad wires, leaky caps, wires may have come loose during transport, if it was out in the cold, that could cause problems. If it's DOA you should be able to get a new one though. Make sure you have the 4/8-pin CPU cord and 24-pin cords securely in place. Those seem like the most likely culprits if they're not seated correctly. Also is your motherboard beeping multiple times? Or just once? If it's multiple, it may be a sign of hardware failure, as the beeps represent an error code. I have to go to sleep, but I'll try to help more tomorrow if this doesn't fix it.
i once had a computer who did that.. and i got told that you had to formate your computer... but that also helped
I had this happen once on a Gigabyte motherboard. After I RMA'd it twice and them saying nothing was wrong with it, I finally figured out one of the two BIOS chips on the board had been corrupted. A simple reflash fixed it, but not after the on/off cycle destroyed my hard drive's head stack making me lose 250 GB of data  Though it sounds more like an overheating problem to me. Check to see if the heatsink is contacting the CPU properly. And it's heat SINK not sync.
I thought this happened when you didn't plug in the 4 pin for the CPU?
