[release]
The Wii Gets a Redesign. Wii Kisses GameCube Goodbye.
This Christmas, the Nintendo Wii is a getting a slight, wait for it, Wii-design. I mean redesign! According to The Official Nintendo Magazine, the tweaked Wii will be released in the UK this holiday season (no word about a US release). The change is that this Wii is designed to lay flat and has a slightly reconfigured design. The original Wii was supposed to sit vertically. The upcoming Wii U console sits flat, so the tweak could be to bring cohesion between the two machines. Or it could bring confusion. The biggest difference is that this console cannot play GameCube games like the current Nintendo Wii. The redesigned console comes packed with a Wii Remote Plus, a Nunchuk and, according to this photo from Eurogamer, copies of Wii Sports and Wii Party. Expect more details like pricing and non-UK availability.[/release] Source Aren't re-releases suppose to be an update?
Eh, really? Why couldn't they have made it sit flat and NOT taken away it's functionalities? I mean does its backwards compatibility really have anything to do with the shape of it's casing?
welp no use for it now except as a paperweight
I liked the earlier design better. Why remove the compatability though?

I never even knew the Wii could play Gamecube games. Now I'm definately not getting the new Wii. There's no need for getting rid of backwards compatibility, I already have one, anyway.
Why not get the new one? It has much better specs, could probably even play BF3, and will be a Major console. Or you worded that wrong and didnt mean the WiiU.
Who cares about backwards compatibility? A used gamecube is like, 30 bucks and computers have gotten to the point where we can emulate Gamecubes anyway.
-snip-
Glad i kept my Wii, i can still play gamecube games oh and it functions as my DVD player now (homebrewing is fucking neat-o) AWESOME!
There must be more to this Why just throw it back out into the market saying that tipping it over is officially supported and you can't play Gamecube games
It's like the 3DS is unable to play any GBA and GBC or GB games
Who cares about backwards compatibility? A used gamecube is like, 30 bucks and computers have gotten to the point where we can emulate Gamecubes anyway.
Except the only ones you'll find are used ones. It's cheap if it's not in good condition, and higher priced if it's in better condition. Why bother looking for another console that might have problems when you can use the Wii backwards-comparability that will work?
Man, I don't even know what the Wii-U does.
Cant you just push the old wii over and you have the same version?
Aren't all Wii's 'Family Editions'?
There are some pretty awesome, non-family friendly games.
Cant you just push the old wii over and you have the same version?
If you push it over really hard? Yeah, the disc drive might break and be unable to read Gamecube games. In all seriousness though, Nintendo's capitalizing on gimmicks and that's not working any more.. 3DS was a relative flop because they didn't brand it as a whole new DS, most people probably assumed it was just another re-release like the Lite, and the Wii U will similarly flop because of both branding and the fact that motion control/touch control is old news.
Mine is already sitting flat fuck your redesigning nintendo

As a very big Nintendo fan and a huge Wii lover, this is a stupid stupid thing.
redesign? it looks like they painted a VHS player white and blue
It just looks like a wii that's laying on its side to me.
Actually, after the 3DS priced drop, sales sky-rocketed
They still have huge losses to make up, and I don't see it happening any time soon. I'll admit I picked up a 3DS when the price dropped, but there's only so many educated consumers out there. Most people will go, "3DS? But I've already got the Lite and the original! I'll just use those for Pokemon instead.." The 3DS is still meant to target the casual audience, but the casual audience has no idea what they're laying their cash down on.
Actually, after the 3DS priced drop, sales sky-rocketed
I still do not know anybody who has one, have never heard anybody in my town talk about them and have never seen anyone ever buy one or even a game for them when I go shopping. So they mustn't have skyrocketed here.
The original wii has little rubber feet on the side, so it can tip over anyway. This makes zero sense.

But that will change soon and it'll be a great console.
I don't get it, this looks exactly like my Wii, except it sits flat, which my Wii can also do (it has nubs on the side so you can sit it horizontally). The only difference is that the placement of the Wii logo has changed, and the inclusion of Motionplus. Seriously, where is the change? Exact same button layout and everything.
Maybe lack of backwards compatibility will cause the price drop? Anyway, I will wait for more info about Wii U.
we sit ours flat anyway??? and i only use it as a smaller gamecube anyway so
I would understand if this was a major redesign, but all it is is a Wii pushed over with the Gamecube bit taken out! Why anyone would want to buy this rather than wait for the Wii U is a mystery to me. Trying to squeeze the last bits of cash out of our pockets before the Wii U, I guess.
