Imagine a world without dealerships, Tesla already is

You can order your Tesla online if you’d prefer. But you won’t be able to pick it up from a store right away because there’s no inventory lot around back – every car is made to order.
Dealerships such as this one have landed Tesla Motors in trouble in the United States, because it’s not a dealership at all; it’s a factory-owned store. Tesla sells cars directly to customers, cutting the usual independently-owned dealerships out of the car equation entirely.
Recently, Michigan’s Republican governor, Rick Snyder, signed a bill that bans any auto maker in the state from selling directly to consumers through factory stores. States with similar bans include Texas, Arizona, Virginia and New Jersey. Other states place restrictions on the number of cars Tesla stores can sell, but in all jurisdictions customers can still buy the cars online. In other words, it’s a mess.
As for which sales model is better for consumers, both factory stores and dealerships have their benefits.
Williams pointed out that having dealers compete against each other for sales and service means consumers can get a better price.
Georgeson said that since Tesla has no middlemen, its prices – while fixed across all stores – are lower than they would be if a dealer was involved.
Tesla’s aim with the factory stores isn’t just selling cars, she said over the phone: “Our first priority is to educate people about what it’s like to own and drive and live with an electric vehicle.” The result is a low-pressure sales environment.

I honestly am one not for dealerships, I buy my cars from other people so I don't have to deal with dealership BS. Even if you are just doing research, my experience with dealers have been very bad considering all the dealers I went to had pushy salesmen, crappy trade ins with a large price tag and after you left they would keep bugging you to buy their cars.
Fuck Tesla needs to start exporting to overseas
I want one
Car dealerships are the reason why nobody buys new cars in here.
I fully understand dealerships not being happy with it.
But banning it by law? Fuck you and fuck your bussiness. This is the shit that makes people hate you.

lol no. Factories sell to dealerships at the same cost. What they compete over is the additional price that they profit over.
Mmm, yes, keep saying they're not dealerships, Elon. They still are, they're simply factory owned and run much more strictly than the traditional dealership.
Still, would be nice to see it force a change in the industry. A large part of why I don't want a new car is the experience buying the fucking thing.

I know dealerships vary, but occasionally there's one or two that actually aren't half bad. The one I get my cars from is such a dealership. Then again my dad happens to know the guy that runs the place from his days working the parts department of the Ford dealership years and years ago, so we tend to get VIP service so to speak.
We're also not in the market for anything new enough to have airbags, so there's that as well. Heh.

You're welcome to the one they try to sell me.
Car dealerships are the reason why nobody buys new cars in here.
Low salaries and general lack of money might have something to do with it too.

They've expanded to most of Europe, China, and soon Australia. Singapore will come in time.

We get it you have a vendetta against modern cars.
Reforming dealerships would be nice. But honestly, I'd rather the dealership system just die. At least for new cars. I'd much rather go straight to a car dealerships website, customize say, a mazda 3, and then get it a few weeks later.
Wait, Virginia has a ban on Tesla?
Fuck, I need to get out of here
I thought all car manufacturers had an online store by now.
and of course, states are banning factory-stores
for our safety, right everyone?
I thought all car manufacturers had an online store by now.
At least in my experience they then direct you to dealerships
if I had massive disposable income and recharge/repair stations here and it was easily practical
that shit would be MINE
Funny how these staunchly republican states are so willing to interfere with the "free market". I wonder if there would be this much resistance if it was a traditional car company instead of an electric car company like Tesla.

Norway was one of the first countries they opened up shop in overseas. I live in Trondheim and go to Norway's biggest Engineering university so you can bet I see the professors driving around with Teslas daily.

It's because the auto dealer association's lobby is intense.
Tesla should sell it's cars via dealers in the states where direct selling to consumers is banned, just so they can point out how much the consumer gets shafted when the prices suddenly rise by thousands of dollars in those states.
Dealerships are nice to have around though, especially if you have an older car and something breaks, they are much more likely to have the part you need than any other random car shop.

Tesla has service stations all over the country that pick up your car when it breaks, so that would still be the case without dealers.

Man what's with you and hating Teslas? You always feel the need to express your hatred towards Tesla or anything related to them every single time they are brought up in these forums
What about used car dealerships? Wouldn't they still be around?
Norway was one of the first countries they opened up shop in overseas. I live in Trondheim and go to Norway's biggest Engineering university so you can bet I see the professors driving around with Teslas daily.
Would be great if they expanded to cover all of Scandinavia
Isn't there a video on YouTube of a guy who does a complete roadtrip of Norway in his Model S, made possible by the fact that Tesla's set up strategically placed recharging stations to cover the entire nation?
What about used car dealerships? Wouldn't they still be around?
Probably
It'd be a bit of a stretch to say all used car shit would be dealt with by manufacturers, because in that case the guy selling his old used car would likely be shafted, even worse than with dealerships.
Car dealerships will never disappear because people will always need a method to test drive cars.
Wait, Virginia has a ban on Tesla?

Someone in my neighborhood in VA has one. I've seen him driving it around and every time it passes i'm like hoyl fuck I want one
EDIT: Internet says tesla isn't banned in the US, "Virginia law prohibits car manufacturers from operating their own dealerships." You can still have one made to order and taken to you.
Car dealerships will never disappear because people will always need a method to test drive cars.
that's why said manufacture opens up a much smaller building for each model fully loaded, that way you can test drive the cars and save tons of space.
