Liberland president arrested by Croatia for trespassing in 'no man's land'
A Czech politician, who declared himself president of a tiny nation established on what he claims is a 2.7-square-mile "no man's land" along the Danube River, was arrested Saturday by Croatian authorities who said he and his self-styled fellow founding fathers of Liberland are trespassing.
Croatian authorities could not be reached for comment to confirm the arrest of Vít Jedlička, a libertarian politician from the Czech Republic. A group calling itself the Liberland Press Association, which has spoken in the past for Jedlička, made the announcement in a statement emailed to FoxNews.com.
“The president of the self-proclaimed micro-nation of the Free Republic of Liberland, Vít Jedlička, has been arrested by Croatian police for illegally trespassing an international border,” read the statement. “The arrest may have taken place on no man’s land territory. This would raise issues on the Croatian-Serbian border and could start a new crisis in the Balkans.”
I didn't even know you could trespass un-owned territory. Also don't mind that it's fox news, it doesn't seem to be biased
Maybe an area of land isn't "no-man's land" just because a crazy libertarian says it is?

Actually if I understood the situation properly, in a strange turn of events there is a strip of land between the borders of Serbia and Croatia that is not claimed by either country.

The yellow zones are claimed by both countries, while the lone green zone is claimed by neither country. This unclaimed area is where where Vit went to set up "Liberland".

From what i understand, the border is set by old constitution of SFRY that says border is Danube, but Danube changed course, leaving one side thinking the border to be unchanged and one considering it to be the new river course.

Well, if you suddenly claimed you owned the land, then you could easily trespass on land that multiple parties have agreed no one "owns" and must remain neutral.
It's sort of like the last slice of pizza. Everyone agrees not to take it and throw it out in five days, then that asshole Steve comes in and eats it and everyone's just like, "fucking Steve."

So nobody should be allowed to cultivate the land because..... no reason.
Sounds like a good system.

But they haven't agreed it's no-ones.
Neither claims it's theirs.
It's like Steve comes and is like "hey guys, who is the last pizza slice of?" and response is "ehh" and "whatever" respectively. So Steve decides to eat the pizza but THEN they suddenly get angry at him, even tho they STILL don't want the Pizza.

By the way, from what I heard, Vít Jedlička has been arrested not for trying to enter the zone, but for trying to LEAVE Croatia on place that's not an official border crossing, which is illegal.
So, they are still not claiming the land, they just don't want anybody to leave Croatia in that particular spot.

Can we count it as a victorious battle? :v:
At least it'll look good on the president's CV. "Annexed a country."

Wait a minute, I just realized that the last part of the Zmajevac II (Kučka) dispute zone translates to "Bitch".
Who the fuck named these squiggly zones?
The circle is now complete.
5 years ago the highest ranking person we arrested was our prime minister
now we arrested a president
of a "foreign" country
croatia DA
I hope he got enough bitcoins donated from reddit to post bail.
And so ends the libertarian experiment of liberland
I had high hopes for this, a Libertarian experiment could work well. But, I suppose the age of colonizing is over, now is the age of waiting for the colonization of the stars.

Sorry. Police only accepts cash and euros.

They already tried a libertarian experiment in 1776. The modern USA is what it ends up turning into.

Is this post a joke?

I like to stay optimistic about social experiments, things that haven't worked a long time ago in a modern setting. It's a different world that it was even 50 years ago. Would still like to see what unadulterated communism can do in a small and controlled setting.

Communism in the small scale form has been around for donkeys years. Monasteries, isolated communities, cooperatives, voluntary communes, various religious sects, etc. They've normally operated as a niche thing rather well where they can.
The downside is that when upsized very few people like or want to live under the system, and it tends make a lot of peoples lives miserable. Plus the big scale version tends to fall apart anyways.

The fact that Croatia controls it to the point of issuing fines to anyone who goes in there is a pretty good argument for it being Croatia's.

Again, keep in mind these areas are completely uninhabited wilderness with literally nobody and nothing of value in it. Croatia is probably mostly trying to keep the guy out because showing they don't care about people fucking around in that area sets a dangerous precedent and I would be personally worried about for instance Russia somehow claiming it as theirs, and then before you know it they start airlifting tanks into the place and before you know it there's concerned rebels all over your territory, suspiciously supplied by heavy weaponry coming from the sovereign nation that was erected next to your borders few months ago.

By the way, Danube river is international waters. In theory, it should be possible to enter the area by boat without entering either of the neighbouring countries.

Wait there's a single last slice of pizza and you decide nobody gets it but you hold onto it for five days then chuck it?
No wonder the economy is buggered

Then they should claim the area officially. It's uncool to deny you own a piece of land, but still try to enforce your laws on it.
