A Toronto woman blames Microsoft for what she calls lax security, after her 11-year-old son’s Xbox Live account was hacked, which she believes allowed a thief to charge $300 in gaming purchases to her credit card.
“I wasn’t aware that these purchases were happening,” said Jennifer Stubbs. “Someone had gone into our device remotely.”
Stubbs said she had no idea hacking of the popular FIFA 13 Ultimate game on Xbox Live was a problem until her son Dylan went to play one morning and found all the players he had bought to build his virtual team — with her permission — had been stolen.
The details are a bit murky on exactly how the kid was hacked.
he probably did something stupid like give away his password and now he's claiming he's hacked so he doesn't get in trouble
Here's betting the kid spent all that money and made up the hacking thing so he doesn't get in trouble

It wouldn't surprise me if the kid was easily gullible, but he's 11. People in the 11-14 age bracket have done worse, though.
Bottom line: mother was too lazy to create a microsoft ID to confirm her sons account so instead let her son create an account with a birthday which made him older than 18 and used her credit card on it to confirm.

Fucking hell, why can't people claim responsibility when they're clearly at fault?

Taking responsibility for your actions? How Absurd :v: (In all seriousness, yeah that seems to be a lot of headlines like this about parents not taking responsibility over their and/or their kid(s) stupid actions over the past few weeks on facepunch)
This has been happening more and more lately and it's getting out of hand. I wonder how the companies are going to react.

It's a very unpatriotic thing to do; attempting to assume responsibility when there are others you can deceitfully lay the blame on is a blasphemy against the United States Ecclesiarchy, and will bring the Inquisition down on your head like a ton of bricks.
But in all seriousness, honesty and sanity seem to mean as much to some people as solidarity; the poor sods probably think that such words are actually the names of Amish small-towns.
BTW, the hack may or may not be the kid's fault since there are cases of people being hacked without them ever owning Fifa, giving out information, or even touching their account months prior to the hack.
But there are also cases where scams for free coins or duplicated players that involves the player giving out their information.
The only foolproof method is never linking your credit card to your account and only purchase MS points from non-sketchy places.
then why did they bought him the Xbox in a first place

I'm so glad that so many places have prepaid cards for their services now, don't have to use anyone's card to buy something and it's safer.
“He was so proud … and all of his friends play it as well. So it’s a really important social thing, and it’s good for his soccer,” said Stubbs.
The kid may have been a liar and have been stupid but security in gaming is a hot button issue. Is the security of Microsoft live strong?.. well not really. Are companies good when dealing with hacks and abuses? Well the best example I've seen is Valve and one of the worst I've seen is the PSN crisis a while ago.
Only zombies are dumb enough to let their XBL accounts get hijacked. No really, not even a caveman should be dumb enough to get their XBL account breached.
To be fair Microsofts security is pretty shit so I wouldn't put it all on the kid.

I bet he gave away his password to someone to level his COD FPS EXCELLENCE account

Did you read those two links that Mastermind gave us?

because if she blames microsoft she probably thinks she will get her money back
Why do parents give their CC info for their kids while not under their control. They have gift point cards for a reason.
“It’s big business. They are targeting the kids, especially under 13. The kids think this is the best thing since sliced bread, so I feel that they are targeting the kids and getting their parents to pay more and more and more into a digital [player] add-on system.”
Couldn't/Shouldn't the parents just say no then?

I really love this to be honest.
Some guy just probably guessed the kid's password reset question. The ones on windows live are absolutely atrocious.
Happens all the time around here, just people only use it to change Facebook profile pictures to dicks,
I don't know about other countries but Microsoft now requires me to put in a code i receive in a text message when i want to change any security settings including reseting the password. I can also clear all security info but that takes 7 days to come into effect and I'd be emailed about it daily.

Probably, but it isn't impossible that he was hacked. A year back, my account and quite a few others were somehow compromised and the people involved bought some stupid points for FIFA 12. Here's a newspost about it.
It's entirely possible that it happened again but, to be real, he probably just gave out his password.

I never answer truthfully, and they always accept vulgar words, like asslicker, or penis, or cunt, or whatever crazy thing I can think of.
