Yep, that's right. Nasa has now put their older spaceships on sale. Here's the full story
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Here's a recession bargain: the space shuttle. NASA has slashed the price of these 1970s era spaceships from $42 million to $28.8 million apiece. The shuttles are for sale once they quit flying, supposedly this fall. When NASA put out the call to museums, schools and others in December 2008, seeking buyers, about 20 expressed interest. NASA spokesman Mike Curie expects more interest, what with the discount. "We're confident that we'll get other takers," Curie said Friday. Discovery is already promised to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. Atlantis and Endeavour are up for grabs. It's possible that Enterprise, a shuttle prototype that never made it to space, also will be available. Enterprise currently is at the Smithsonian. Curie said no decisions will be made before summer. The new lower price is based on NASA's estimate of the cost for transporting a shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to a major U.S. airport, and for displaying it indoors in a climate-controlled building. The travel cost may vary based on location. NASA has moved up the delivery date to the latter half of 2011, instead of 2012. Potential customers have until Feb. 19 to put in a request. As for the space shuttle main engines, those are now free. NASA advertised them for $400,000 to $800,000 each in December 2008, but no one expressed interest. So now the engines are available, along with other shuttle artifacts, for the cost of transportation and handling. Assembly will be required, however. Then maybe start our own space station. Whada yah say Facepunch?
No thanks, I'm too poor
We don't need spaceships we just need to jump onto the moon from Everest god learn to use search dude.
Rated Gaybows. And I guess this is NASAs way of cleaning up.
We don't need spaceships we just need to jump onto the moon from Everest god learn to use search dude.
Then how would we build a space station? :frown:
Now, TO MARS
You forgot to mention actually acquiring the resources for a shuttle launch costs just a few billion dollars.
Now, TO MARS
Better than jumping off of Everest.
You forgot to mention actually acquiring the resources for a shuttle launch costs just a few billion dollars.
Not if we know people who know government agencies, that can hook us with fuel.
You're late. However, I still want a shuttle.
What school can afford a 28 million dollar spaceship. The fuck?
I really wish I was an eccentric billionaire right now. Ah well maybe my time will come when they start selling old space stations and jumpgates
ask the gift giving thread
God I want one so bad. I would put my bed in that area where the cargo/ crane arm goes.
Then how would we build a space station? :frown:
Build it on the moon and push it into space duh.
Build it on the moon and push it into space duh.
Silly me, I'm so stupid. :derp:
guys, lets all pool money together and buy a space shuttle like OP said, and then do it again
I wonder what would actually happen if Facepunch acquired a shuttle along with engines and resources for launch.
well facepunch would get more public recognition for one
We'd rig it so it was remotely controlled with no override and we'd use it to launch people into space we didn't like, 'cause the rest of us would already be enjoying the moon and our sexy new space station.
if all the active facepunch members donate $1,196.07 each we can buy the space shuttle.
So my idea is that we should all pitch in and buy one.
We'd still need to get money for a lifting body, and somehow I get the feeling an unauthorized rocket launch won't go over too well with any of the world governments. Although, I suppose we could all pitch in for a big jumbo jet and tow the thing into the upper atmosphere or something.
Screw it, the source sais you need to assemble the ship.
if all the active facepunch members donate $1,196.07 each we can buy the space shuttle.
I was going to say, someone do the math. I'm fucking down, are YOU?
I want the Enterprise.
Screw it, the source sais you need to assemble the ship.
Break out the airfix glue lads, we've got a model to make.
I want to buy the Enterprise!
What school can afford a 28 million dollar spaceship. The fuck?
Eton.
Huntville better buy one. They already have Enterprise. We can sell that one and buy a real one. [editline]10:14AM[/editline] Wait holy shit. BRB expressing interest in the SSME's.
What school can afford a 28 million dollar spaceship. The fuck?
Ivy League universities.
