First of all, I'm sorry if this is the wrong section. All I see are more technical-related topics, so it makes it uneasy to ask for this type of help here. Just tell me where to post, or move the topic there, and I'll thank you. The problem I'm facing is an odd one for me. As of yesterday, certain Steam games stopped working. Upon clicking to play a game, the "preparing to launch" dialog box appears. This then disappears, and another dialog box saying "HL2.exe has stopped working" shows up. Nothing else can be done. The list of games this happened with is currently: Garry's Mod, Team Fortress 2 (+Beta), and Counter Strike: Source. Half Life 2 and Portal worked fine. This happens on occasion, so I uninstalled those games and reinstalled. They still didn't work. One of those games, Counter Strike: Source, I hadn't touched in over a year, which is curious. I uninstalled Steam, including all of my games. I removed all leftover files and registry keys to be sure. Then, I installed Steam and downloaded CS:S. I launched it. Preparing to launch appears. It disappears, and the same error pops up. On a completely clean install of both Steam and the game, it happens. So obviously the problem lies outside of Steam. I don't see how, as nothing has changed since the other day. But alright, I can deal with that. The only problem is that I have no clue as to what is causing it. So, I came to Facepunch for help. I read the sticky, and noticed that it asks for a Speccy snapshot. I saved one as a text file so as to edit out a few things, mainly the serial number. Shouldn't make a difference. Here you go: Note, that I can and have played all these games just fine, so the requirements are alright. I currently do not have a dedicated firewall installed, as my old firewall was not doing a very good job. I'll install one tomorrow (today, as it's about 5AM at the time of writing). If you need anything else (which you probably will, as I don't see how one can find a solution with just this), just ask. I'll happily provide it.
Graphics Dell F185A (1366x768@60Hz) Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset Here is your problem. This onboard cards sucks really really bad. I dont know why it did work before, maybe there was an update from valve or something.
Yeah, it does suck. However, why would I be able to play Portal/Half Life 2 on high settings fine, but CS:S won't even load? The problem is occurring before the game loads, so I know the graphics aren't the problem. Status: Currently downloading my Source games again. I have a download speed of 1.2MB/s right now, so it should be done within a couple hours.
Double post bump, but with an update on my problem. I asked for help from someone else who told me to do some things. It all ended up to: I installed Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 and made a virtual OS. I installed Steam as well as CS:S and TF2. When I launched TF2, it went to the Source/Valve copyright screen. Then it crashed without any error dialog. I have no idea what the problem is.
Only thing I can think off is downloading new drivers.
Only thing I can think off is downloading new drivers.
I can't find any newer drivers, so I'll install the earlier copy and see if that works. Edit: Oh, found a driver version dated 6 days after my installed version. Perhaps an update to fix my problem? I can only hope. Installing... Edit2: I guess those drivers weren't new. Nothing updated. Going to try an earlier version. Edit3: Rolled back video drivers, upgraded both audio driver and BIOS. Not working.
Well that cards is just so old and crappy, you should just upgrade to something if you want to keep playing games.
So this just started happening yesterday? If so check if there were any updates to anything. If there was make a restore point and and roll back. Keep in mind that if this does fix the problem, it still is a band aid solution. Right now I'd save up a good 500 bucks and go build yourself a decent computer later on.

The only thing that really changed was Java 7 being installed. Rolled it back, still doesn't work. I think I'll do a wipe soon. And yeah, I'm gonna build my own once I get some good money.
