Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca will plead guilty in a downtown courtroom Wednesday to making false statements, marking a dramatic turn in the ongoing federal investigation into corruption in the Sheriff's Department.
According to a charging document filed by federal prosecutors on Wednesday morning, Baca lied twice about his involvement in hiding an inmate from FBI agents who were investigating brutality and corruption by sheriff's deputies in the county jails.
Baca also lied when he said he was unaware that his subordinates planned to approach an FBI special agent at her home, the document said.
Baca's attorney, Michael Zweibeck, said his client has agreed to plead guilty to a single count as part of a deal with prosecutors that will see him spend no more than six months in prison and possibly no time at all.
"Or no time at all"
What a joke.
His subordinates literally visited an FBI special agent's home, after sending a fake inmate they knew was an FBI informant to a separate jail under a fake name, during an investigation into police corruption, and the police chief knew all this happened?
This is why we need better accountability. That is fucking absurd.

I feel this is a "what did you expect would happen" type of thing, have him just confess right from the start?

I'd expect him not to be stupid enough to purposefully interfere in an FBI investigation multiple times.

Rewards outweigh the risks in his mind, I guess.

If that was the plea deal it is likely they didn't have much on him or he made a great fucking deal and is going to provide the FBI with some solid facts.
Needless to say though, anyone involved is going to be fucked. Prison time regardless of the duration as a former ex-cop who was corrupt does not equal a good time. Plus a ruined name, never allowed to work in law enforcement again he would be lucky to find a job working a McDonalds.

Sheriff's are elected officials, so he was likely trying to stay in office and hide his shit.
