Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first every-so-often arts section contest under my supervision!
[release]The theme:

What does this mean? anything you want it to... kinda. It's meant to cover a broad range, but still sticks to a thought or two of old, decrepit, scary and haunted things of the past (or future? Post-apocolyptica is fine). Do what you want, so long as you can explain how it fits the theme.[/release]
[release]This session we will be focusing on three visual arts:
[img_thumb]http://www.hearinggodsite.com/writing_tablet%20pen%20and%20pencil%20smaller.jpg[/img_thumb]
Drawing
This will cover all scribbleforms, including both traditional (Pen/Pencil and Paper) and digital (Photoshop AND MSPaint).

Photography
The judging will not be critical of the quality (or lack thereof) of the equipment. It will be focused solely on the content, composition and bribes.

3D
You have one or two choices: Make a single model and showcase it, or make a full scene. You will not be required to model a full scene if you don't want to, I know we're on time constraints. There will be no time extensions unless everyone is behind.
Note: they will be judged then voted on separately as to avoid general bias between the artstyles.[/release]
[release]"What do I do to get in on the action?"
PM your submissions to my little alt, The Ninjas with the following criteria:
• Make the title just your category, like "3D" or "Photography". I'll know it's the photoshop contest, I'm not getting any other PMs.
• Include a title, short description, and tell me how long you spent on it (if you remember). If you did any extra work in post production(like using photoshop on a photo or 3D model to enhance something) make sure to note that too.
• You are allowed ONE entry. If you post several, you will be asked to choose one or be disqualified.
• Do not post any submissions in the thread or else it will be snipped and ignored.
• Obvious Spam/Troll submissions will merit a rather hefty BAN.
:siren: SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE AT THE END OF SUNDAY, AUGUST 22nd. Judges will get the pictures sorted in a day or two after that, and three days will be left for voting.
If you need any help or have other questions about the contest, feel free to post in this thread. [/release]
[release]The Prize Pool
• First off, I'd like to proudly offer the book that I worked on with my mom for the 3D artists, "Mastering Mental Ray", which has received raving reviews and praise from the developers of Mental Ray, merited an appearance/signing at siggraph, and countless other great reviews. Signed and shipped off for free!
• Second, applicable for photographers, photoshoppers and others who work with digital imagery, I have purchased an unlimited shareable license for the entire Topaz Labs Bundle, totaling in worth at about $360 (currently a 50% off sale), and will be happy to give access to someone who'll use it.
I might be willing to donate some sort of money/prize if needed.

I would be happy to contribute some items, problem is a majority of them are still stuck in my old house. Here is a list of what I might be able to donate:
- The Art of Video Games (book)
- Creating Effective Textures (book)
- An Adesso Beginner's Tablet
-A Telescope (I think it broke, not sure) plus 3 different lenses
- Photoshop 7 (opened but never installed)
- A epiphone Hybrid guitar
- Mini- amp
Also I could possibly design a giant poster of anything they want.
[/release]
this thread will remain stickied for a few days so everyone has a chance to see it.
How many winners will there be for each session?
that ultimately depends on two factors:
The number of contestants per each subset (X amount in photography, Y amount in 3D, Z in Drawing) vs the overall size of that group's Prize Pool. I doubt we'll have enough contestants or resources to really give out more than a 1st place and a runner-up prize, but I can be proven wrong. :buddy:
Does After Effects count as 3d?
I'd assume it counts more as 'videography', but I'm not sure what you're getting at with the program that would be 3D aside from layering.
You're in a very niche group with AE, if you ask me. I've only seen you and Funnycat ever really do much with it. If more people step up about it, I can make it part of the next session of contests.
Fine. Photoshop has 3d. What now.
:golfclap:
I suppose if you're this adamant about it I can let you jump in on the 3D section. Same goes for funnycat if he sees this :buddy:
but I'm curious now, since I've more or less just thought of after effects as video compositing. What 3D work can be done?
I like this, already have a idea or two to try as well. Should be good exercise to my rusty modeling skills.
That guitar offer gets my attention. I'll probably do something if I get the chance to.
I might enter something. I will decide tomorrow. This is possibly the worst time the contest could be for me. It all really depends on whether or not I can put off some models for FWE as to whether I will be entering this.
I work in flash and like to animate so can I link a .swf or do I have to .gif it, or are animated scenes not included?
everyone can open an .swf file wont be no problem.
also i am in :D
I work in flash and like to animate so can I link a .swf or do I have to .gif it, or are animated scenes not included?
It's drawing, not animation. One single image.
I was thinking of a single image but say the leaves of a tree sway in the breeze or the water in a river flows. I like doing it because it adds to the drawing. With Flash that can all be done in just one 'image/frame'.
Ah, like that. Yeah, I think that should be acceptable.
But do notice that it can take away some quality and fine details in your work as it's needs to be animateable making it harder to compete with people that have rather fine polished that single frame. Since the contest is drawing a single image I don't think we can take the loss of quality in animation into account that much as that was a choice you took yourself and didn't have anything to do with what we requested.
But on the other hand, the loss of quality will most likely only be important should you tie up with somebody.
True, true. you've got a good point. I think I'll do a still image to the best quality and if I have time I'll see what I can do to it in flash. Thanks!
so if i am making a 3d model, i am allowed to photoshop it right? and am i required to 3d model file as well? or just a picture from the best angle?
Ill have a go at something, most likely drawing. when do the entries have to be in by?
Edit: God its in cappitals as well
Ill have a go at something, most likely drawing. when do the entries have to be in by?
Says in the OP.
22.
Sooo, old and forgotten, eh? Sis you say you wanted it to be "scary", like you said in he OP, or am I just reading this wrong? I just want to be on the same page as everyone else i the subject of "old and forgotten". Would someone be so kind enough as to create a slightly more easier to decipher picture?
do whatever comes to mind for you. I don't want to make any pictures to really demonstrate things, because then everyone would follow the picture instead of interpreting it their own way.
You could do many, many different things and still fit the theme, if you're not sure if your idea is OK just post here or PM me.
Also, thanks to dgg for talkin' with people and showing me those examples. Neat :buddy:

Same here. I'll be sure to work extra hard for it.
It's on.
deadline feels too soon.
Fucking shit if whoever fucks up with importing my nerf gun, I'm gonna shoot them in their fucking kneecaps.

But the sponge darts won't do anything

sponge darts, my only weakness!
Am I allowed to do a series of drawings which all fit into the theme and are all related? As one entry of course.
so if i am making a 3d model, i am allowed to photoshop it right? and am i required to 3d model file as well? or just a picture from the best angle?
Photoshopping your renders is acceptable, but NO stock photography (or googled pictures) are allowed to be part of it. You are allowed to use your own photos as a background, and to paint on texturing or refine edges or whatever. If AJacks or DGG think otherwise, they'll say so (hopefully soon).
Also, you are not required to post the model data. All we need is one or two pictures to show off a model (like front and back shots), or a single picture if you're doing a full scene.
Am I allowed to do a series of drawings which all fit into the theme and are all related? As one entry of course.
if it's like a comic or they form one related picture, yes. If it's completely different submissions, no.

I mean a series of picture under the same theme and idea, just different content in each picture, all submited as one piece of "Art" together. They would work on their own but together they are also one piece.
I'm tempted to say no, but if you can present them in one large image (like framing a collection of related photos on a wall), it'd be OK. They'll have to be judged as "one" submission, though, so don't go too overboard.
