A fisherman from El Salvador who says he spent more than a year adrift in the Pacific Ocean has arrived home, sobbing as he touched down at an airport in the capital San Salvador.
Dozens of people crowded the airport on Tuesday night for a glimpse of Jose Salvador Alvarenga, 37, who previously told officials he survived by drinking turtle blood and catching fish and birds with his bare hands, before washing ashore in the Marshall Islands at the end of January.
"I can't find any words to say," an emotional Alvarenga said on Tuesday, according to a Reuters news agency report.
The famous castaway was reunited with family at the airport before being taken to a local hospital in a wheelchair for further tests.
While the exact dates remain unclear, Alvarenga is believed to have set sail on a shark-fishing trip from southern Mexico in late December 2012 before being blown out to sea, drifting for months and washing up some 10,000km away in the Marshall Islands.
He was found in a disoriented state on a remote coral atoll in his 7.3-meter fiberglass boat.
Any word on whether or not he will undergo physical therapy?
There's no way in hell you could spend that much time at sea and not have several muscle and bone atrophy.

If anything id say his muscles and bones are stronger. Can you imagine trying to catch turtles? He would have to be swimming about, not to mention possibly swimming to move the direction of his boat or just general exercise. Swimming is one of the best exercises out there.

Considering what he claims to have eaten and drank for more than a year, it wouldn't be too far of a stretch if he had serious nutritional deficiencies.

Which is why he's in a wheelchair.
Swimming is a great exercise if you have the calorie intake to sustain it, which turtle blood and as much fish as you can catch with your hands won't provide.
Saw this on the news this morning. Image of the guy presumably getting off the boat that saved him:

In his eventual book, will this man will proclaim that he lied and ate his only companion to survive in the wastes? Who knows. All I know is he is a fucking man; and his beard will most likely become steel by the end of this decade due to manliness.
They also rescued Mr.Wilson?

He looks a tiny bit like Brian Blessed, as if Brian's spirit guided him and shaped him just a tiny bit
The resemblance is uncanny but I guess all men lost at sea grow shrubs on their faces in reality

This reminded me of something slightly off-topic, but to my knowledge there is not a single good castaway-themed game out there. Y'know, fight for survival, make shelter, maybe even try to get away.
The only thing I can think of is The Forest, but that's not out yet and probably won't be for a couple more months.

Hmm, yes, but exercise requires nutrition. Preferably more nutrients than the body metabolises in a resting state. He managed to catch turtles, fish and birds, but I highly doubt it would be enough for him to build muscles and bones, especially since he probably missed out on a lot of other nutrients that is required.
Personally, I also doubt that he actually left his boat, seeing the risk that it will drift away. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he had to.
Though then again, I clueless on how to survive in the open sea. Just giving my 2 cents.

That was probably when they found him.

If you click the links in the original post it will tell you.
""Doctors say he's severely dehydrated and low on vitamins and minerals," he said.
Doctors said Alvarenga's limbs have started to swell, and they can't seem to keep him hydrated.""
