In this thread we discuss ADHD and how it effects us throughout our daily lives.
Ill write a better op later. I just double dosed on vyvance thinking it was my cold medication.
I mean It's only 1:30am right? Whats the worse that ca-
I take my pills and get on with my life.
That's my story. lol
not adhd but dyslexic which is symptomatically similar. didn't find out until i was 18 and in my third semester of college.
it's really nice spending your entire life being told you're lazy and just not trying hard enough by every psychiatrist you see without it occurring to anyone there might be a problem
Why is there a thread for this? ADHD doesn't really affect you as a person, to the extent something like Autism or eve Dyslexia would, so there isn't really any reason to flaunt about it or ask for advice. Most posts will end up be self diagnosed saying 'I'm supa hypa!! Spork!! xDdd'

With relation to others with ADHD, Id consider myself lucky as I only have borderline ADHD with Dyspraxia thrown into the mix, which is relatively common. Ive found myself on many an occasion doing something and being enveloped in it one second, then suddenly doing something entirely different the next. And being as I am "slightly" more medically knowledgeable than your average Joe, it doesn't help ones sanity.
TLDR: I've got it easier than most and Im fucking insane as I know it all.
Hey look a duck
how do you know if you have adhd

ignorant posts like this belittling adhd are exactly the reason we need a thread for it. disorders like adhd and dyslexia come with different degrees of severity, you can't say one is worse than the other because they're very diverse symptomatically.
people who don't have any mental disorders/disabilities often have trouble comprehending what those with adhd or dyslexia go through, if anything i think it's a good idea to have a thread like this so people with adhd/dyslexia can support one another and (as the title suggests) give advice for coping with it. mostly i think it's nice to know you're not alone.
as for people pretending to have adhd, pretty much every thread gets shitposts like that. i'd like to think that if this thread becomes active most of the posts would actually have to do with adhd and not based on misconceptions.
Well, I have ADD, which basically makes it hard for me to concentrate on things that don't interest me, as it doesn't feel rewarding to do them. I don't get hyper when I'm not medicated, just super non-attentive. Anyway, I take my pills and get on with my life.

just stop
ADHD doesn't really affect you as a person
besides the effect it has on your grades? attention span? i know someone with ADHD who can't read a book because they can't actually focus or remember any of the things they were reading about.
how can you say that without knowing anything about this subject.
not to mention people can also develop coping mechanisms which sometimes can make doing other things difficult when they interfere with those mechanisms, and not to mention the other issues that ADHD usually is accompanied by.
you're just doing the exact same routine other people do when they want to dismiss autism or dyslexia.
there isn't really any reason to flaunt about it or ask for advice
to interact and build social connections with people who have the same issues or struggles? or is that not a good enough reason for you?

and if that bothers you so much then don't visit this thread
i solved your problems for you

ADHD and I got all A and A* in my recent GCSE mocks.

Autism and dyslexia are by far more trouble some then ADHD. Don't even try to deny
Attention deficit disorder is a serious illness that- ooh look a butterfly
I got diagnosed with ADHD and they told me to take medicine for it.
I think it's silly, and don't. All A's at a private university, hasn't really affected me at all.
Unless you're an extreme case, it's pretty easy to just adjust yourself so that it's harder to forget stuff. Write things down and make it a habit to check your list of things to do, and you will be fine. I also think that they hand out the diagnosis to WAY too many people. Not getting good grades? Must be ADHD. Forget things sometimes? Must be ADHD. Because normal people never forget stuff.
For extreme cases then yes, I guess it might be good to take medicine. Otherwise, the side effects are way more terrifying than forgetting to do your homework every so often.
"Yah, ADHD really im-HEY LOOK HOMEWORK TO DO!"
I recently switched from concerta to ritalin. Anybody had any experience with it?
Oh, I have ADD not ADHD.

Maybe you two were falsely diagnosed?
[editline]28th January 2013[/editline]
like what led to you even being diagnosed
I think that physiologists hand out ADHD diagnosis too frequently. Over 90 percent of (children) ADHD diagnosis are not as a result of tests made in the office, but as a result of what the parents describe. Only 10 percent of tests turn up conclusively positive, and the symptom list that's used to make the diagnosis sounds simply like a reflection of average child behavior. (Running, Climbing, Talking excessively, and procrastination, to name a few.)
I'm not questioning ADHD's validity as a condition, but I do question the constant and generalized nature of the diagnosis. The risk of putting children on hardcore stimulants, when there's no complete and valid proof there's anything wrong with them.

ADHD/ADD is on the Autism spectrum and is not just a problem with attention span, its a brain developed condition just like Autism or Dyslexia.

I'm willing to bet money they were falsey diagnosed. It's incredibly easy to be diagnosed with add/adhd whether you have it or not. It's ridiculous how wrong the diagnoses usually are.
ADHD just makes absolutely everything in existence interesting
that's it just deal with it (i have adhd)
Everyone experiences ADD/ADHD symptoms in some way or the other, at least I believe.
The US med companies are making fucking enormous amounts of money giving out ADHD pills like candy to everyone.
itt: the most over diagnosed illness as a scapegoat for rowdy undisciplined children
I was just about to bring that subject up.
I was wondering if anyone here was diagnosed and put on meds rather quickly, and if said meds are causing side effects either on emotions or health.
If so: you're more than likely misdiagnosed like I was. Even moreso if you were diagnosed in the late 90's or early 2000's.
ADHD is definitely over-diagnosed but it is a real condition. It's caused by a dopamine deficiency in the frontal lobes of the brain, which is the part of the brain that handles memory, problem solving, attention, and parts of the personality too I think.
I know this because I was diagnosed with severe ADHD as a child (not misdiagnosed) and I know there is a clear difference in the way my brain functions when I have taken a dopamine supplement and when I have not. The difference in my ability to remember things, focus, and solve complicated problems is night and day.
Frankly it pisses me off when I read about people calling ADHD a fake condition or just an excuse for laziness. To me it's the same as people who think depression is "just feeling a little sad" and that they should get over it. Unless you have been there yourself you can't understand what it is like. The least you could do is try to understand, and if not, just keep your mouth shut.
I don't even view it as a "disorder". It's exactly what you said, a deficiency. So you're not even taking meds, your taking supplements.

It pretty much goes hand in hand with mental illness like depression, anxiety, and Bipolar disorder. ADHD may not be a huge problem on it's own but people with ADHD are much more likely to fall into other categories and deeper levels of mental illness. Somebody who experiences a severe level of ADHD but doesn't take the proper medications and therapy can easily lead them to more life altering mental states. I know this because I have experienced it myself, which is why you shouldn't downplay a deficiency that has the potential to do a lot of damage to somebody.

Nearly every deficiency does this though.

I have diagnosed ADHD, been on medication for around 10 years, and can safely say that that is stupid as shit. This thread is for advice. If you don't have it, and aren't going to contribute, don't click the post.

Exactly what you said.
people with out legs can't walk
people with dopamine deficiency can't concentrate, remember stuff, etc.
It's exactly the same thing. There is no "man up and deal with it" any more than there is for other mental conditions.
My child wont eat his vegetables and refuses to go to bed on time.
Im sorry love but your child has ADHD.
I knew a guy who had it but he claims to have grown out of it and doesnt feel the need to take his medication.
I was diagnosed with ADHD about 3 months ago (Currently 17). I knew I had it a long time ago, I just wanted to try and work past it. Well, Im glad I started on medication as every aspect of my life has gotten better.
On-top of that, it has greatly enhanced one skill me and my father both possess, which is visualization. I can think about something, and vividly see it in my head. I can think of a cars front suspension, see it, and play with it all in my head. Its a really neat skill, that I believe was brought on by my ADHD. I actually hate it sometimes, example being; My girlfriend wants to cut her hair short. I see her face with short hair added for about 1.5-2 seconds in my head. This allows me to know what it would generally look like, and allows me to tell her my opinion. The bad part is, she knows im visualizing it, and she bases my opinion off the look I make which I can't really control, when the visualization just appears.
I got off-topic now, but I actually don't see my ADHD as a bad thing, just something to work through.
