• Making a GMod server box, trying to figure out RAM and hard drive space needed.

Looking to custom build a server box, but was wondering, how much hard drive space do I need for installing windows home server, Valve SRCDS, and some gmod addons? All I'm looking for is maybe, 3 gmod servers on one box, with basically, wire, phx, ULX, and the gamemode on them. So I'm wondering, how much Hard drive space should I have? Also, an estimate on RAM would be nice.
Well..sort of as a reference: I ran (and plan to start up again) a GMod server off of my laptop for a while. I could fit everything on my 100GB HDD just fine. My laptop has 2GB of RAM/ a Core 2 Duo T7400...everything ran smooth. Main problem was my connection, having my upload speed max at 1.5Mbps (at best) was a killer sometimes. My max download is ~10Mbps, but of course that isn't always sustained either.

I can't tell right now because I'm upgrading in the next few days. Basically, what I'm wondering is how do RAM and Hard drive space, if at all, affect server speed?
HD space doesn't affect more than the number of addons you can install. RAM is pretty important - 2GB should do it. A 2GHz dual-core could handle 3 servers just fine. This page has some useful tips and tricks. Alright, cool, with the new internet connection I'm getting, probably tomorrow, I will get 15 MBPS(1875 KBPS) thanks for the help guys.
Well you want to make sure it's got a solid upload speed too.
That IS the upload speed... [editline]08:33PM[/editline] Ooh, scratch that, checked again, 5000 KBps upload. [editline]08:47PM[/editline] Quick question though, is that like, 1600 = 40 players per server or per internet connection or what?
40 players is how many you could support with that speed. Doing some quick calculations, I'm thinking you could run a few 20 or so slot servers if you wanted to on that connection.
Not really 40, as GMod uses alot more bandwidth then that calculates for.
16 i would say
16 i would say
5000 KBps upload is only 16 gmod players? Shit.
5000 KBps upload is only 16 gmod players? Shit.
Exept if you're planning on running a RP server, then a 16 player server is a big enough server. construction servers with space for more then 16 players are usually filled with douches, and with only 16 players you can easier "control" the players.
20 or 24 is a pretty good size for RP servers.
So, if i'm planning on running a series of servers, about 4 for Gmod, 3 for TF2, and 3 for CS:S, what should i do? Is that a number for my whole internet, per server, or per server box or what?
10 servers? Off a residential internet connection? Good luck. [editline]09:30PM[/editline] Oh, and you'd need at least a good quad-core for 10 Source servers.

You would probably be better off renting a server box.
Alright, so what about hosting 4 servers (10-slot, 10-slot, 25-slot and a 4-slot?)
Alright, so what about hosting 4 servers (10-slot, 10-slot, 25-slot and a 4-slot?)
make it 3, 10 slots and 1, 4 slots, then the connection should only be used for those 4 servers and nothing else.

Alright, what I'm doing is buying a few server boxes, and splitting them up, 2 of my friends and myself are getting them.
You can buy a server box not really called a "server box" , but with this you can host how many servers you want. If you want 1 server can u run it with 50 no lag. But the more servers you had the more lag will happen and the server box is about 150$ a month. Sassilization VenatusDefero and Exiled are 3 clans i know that uses the box. ill give a link if you want
