I have a HP nc4200 laptop which has a 60GB Toshiba IDE hard drive.
I would like to replace it with a Samsung HM160HC 160GB drive.
However, the Toshiba has some sort of adapter on it, which is removable which provides standard IDE pins
Just asking, for the Samsung drive, would I just be able to attach the adapter and fit it in, or are laptop hard drives not as cross-compatible as PC ones (e.g. IDE connection in a different location so it wont line up with the laptop connectors etc)?
I'm sure that the answer is yes, but I would like to be 100% sure before I buy the drive.
Mechanically and electrically, yes.
Some companies might use proprietary connectors, which adaptors will be needed. The chances of so is quite slim.
Usually.
Also, I've noticed that the four extra pins, which is for power I believe is not connected in my laptop. Would the Samsung drive require these pins connected or will it work fine without?
Are you talking about the 4 pins on the left?

If so, they are merely jumpers, not power pins.
